Know what gang? It’s been a weird week.

On the one hand, things in my house have started getting back to normal after a busy month. I was pretty happy about this as it seemed to be coming just in time for Christmas. On the other hand, the last five days has found life giving me subtle reminders of the kid I once was, and who that kid wanted to grow up to be. I’m not quite sure that kid turned out to be who he wanted to be, and as such I’m a bit thrown off.

As if that little paradox wasn’t bad enough, a dear friend has had a death in the family. It’s not entirely sudden, which is to say the person who passed had been sick for quite some time, but it still came as a surprise. I was with my friend all day on Saturday, and while she talked about what was going on, she was very much in good spirits overall. One night later, that would all change.

I guess life just has its ways of reminding you who’s really in charge sometimes (Hint: It’s not you).

APologies for the melancholy nature of this little spiel. I’ll be in better spirits once Sunday arrives. In the meantime, here’s what my friends are up to.

For your listening and reading fulfillment, I give you…

Want to get half a grocery store looking at you as if you’re nuts? Listen to three Jamaicans mock each others film choices through earbuds as you shop.

I am champing at the bit to see ZERO DARK THIRTY, and my antsiness gets worse every day thanks to its continued praise and elusiveness. Candice from Reel Talk has seen it and thinks it’s top drawer.

I always like to keep an ear out for non-Hollywood films that are worth a look. This week, Buckle came through and put the spotlight on five movies from his native Australia. I’d like to counter with five Canadian films, but sadly, my domestic viewing has been terrible this year.

This past week, I got to asking if the price of admission holds sway on what we think of the movies we see. Also this past week, Courtney took a moment to answer me.

It would appear as though Fandango has come to terms with 3-D.

It would also appear that james Blake Ewing is paraphrasing Sam Shakusky.

Then there’s the Tweet of The Week. Who wants to turn this into a banner for me?

Enjoy!

  1. Sorry to hear about your loss, Ryan, especially the jarring manner in which it occurred.

I had a feeling when that went up on Twitter, that would be the pick. Who would’ve thought that Hitchcock would inspire so much vitriol?

  2. Sorry to hear about the passing in your friend’s family, this past week has been filled with a lot of sad news it seems.

  3. Sorry to hear about your week. Mine has been really weird too. On one hand, I was announced as Head Girl of my school, on the other hand, my Grandmother who has advanced dementia is very close to passing away. It has been a toughie. Alas, hopefully Christmas can bring a little more cheer to you and your family!

  4. Sorry to hear about the recent passing in your friend’s family. It is morbid to consider, but back here there have been a lot of recent passings. My grandmother passed away not long ago and some of my friends have lost grandparents too.

Thank you for the link, Ryan. I think a few of the films I mentioned – The Sapphires, Wish You Were Here and Lore – should be on your shores soon.
