I’m in better spirits than I was yesterday, but barely. While reading about the truly horrific things this world is capable of doesn’t help my mood, spending a night celebrating Christmas with good friends helps bend the bar back to its rightful position…or at least get close.

I don’t quite know how many more films I have in me over the next seventeen days, but I think my loose goals for the year will likely get hit. 125 screenings seems possible, so too does 250 first-timers. If I really went on a bender, I could get close to 500 movies on the year…but something tells me that two-a-days just aren’t in the cards going forward.

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY – In glorious 2-D. Sometime over the next few weeks, I’ll have to sneak into a 48fps screening to see the difference for myself.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
FANNY AND ALEXANDER – I can’t shake the feeling that my Christmas celebrations aren’t Swedish enough.
THE LORAX – This might be the first Dr. Seuss property I’ve liked since those old Chuck Jones cartoons.
THE IMPOSTER – The best documentary of 2012. By a mile.
FLIGHT – Watch this for the performance more than the story.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
PSYCHO – After HITCHCOCK, I just had to o back to the slource material.
JOYEUX NOEL – One of my very favorite Christmas films. Still so very moving.
LOVE ACTUALLY – Speaking of favorite Christmas films…

How’s about you – seen anything good?

24 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched Dec 8 – Dec 14)

  1. Huzzah for finally getting around to The Imposter! It was an odd week of films for me to say the least.

    First Time:

Moonrise Kingdom – Loved this film, left a big smile on my face.

California Split – One of the Altman films I had not seen…was not that fond of it.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed – Enjoyed it but found the last act to be rather sloppy.

Bedazzled (1967 Version) – Despite starring Dudley Moore, I did not find it funny at all.

Rich and Strange – Hitchcock Alert! Sadly this is forgettable Hitchcock.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry – Was on Netflix US so thought I would take a look. I ended up really liking this documentary, though it made me realize how poorly we all use Twitter in comparison to Ai Weiwei

    Re-watch:

Hard Eight – I still really enjoy this film. I had forgotten how good the performance were in it, especially the scenes involving Philip Baker Hall and Samuel L. Jackson.

    1. I’ve been meaning to see HARD EIGHT forever, but I always seem to forget when I actually go to my little dvd shop. I’d just say ‘screw it’ and buy it blind – a safe bet considering how much I like PTA’s other films – but it’s out of print!

Someday, I will finally scratch that title off the list of shame.

  2. All theatrical this week.

    Screenings:
    Hellraiser – S&M Horror
Cloud Atlas – I quite liked it
Octopussy – One of the more ridiculous Bond films
    A View to a Kill – Well, Walken’s good…
Moonraker – Not bad per se, just really cheesy
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – In glorious HFR 3D. I’m on-board with 48 fps.

    1. To tell the truth, I haven’t been to the Lightbox this frequently since they screened Tim Burton’s films two years ago.

I would say that I’m pretty much done with the James Bond films (though I hope to see 1-2 more before the series/exhibit ends in late January).

After the current season (and Canada’s Top Ten), I’m probably going to go back to just 1-2 Lightbox screenings a week.

  3. Glad you like The Imposter, it’s still my pick for the best film of 2012 (there goes the suspense), Charlie Parker feels very much like a Coen Brothers movie character.

    First time:

This is Not A Film – An act of defiance or a cry for help, perhaps a little bit of both.

Perks of Being A Wallflower – Should have caught this one earlier, but I really enjoy this.

    A Royal Affair – Sadly I don’t remember anything about this…

Dr Strangelove – It’s one that I somehow always manage to miss, finally able to see it at the Lightbox. A very wicked satire.

    Rewatch:

Death Proof – Not QT’s worst film. It’s quite good for what it is.

Dark Knight Rises – This is my third time watching this, still love it. Bring on the haters!

    1. You won’t find me amongst TDKR haters. I’m still quite smitten with the film having just rewatched it a few weeks ago.

Perhaps now that I’ve caught up with THE IMPOSTER, I can also find a way to scratch THIS IS NOT A FILM off my list of films I wanted to see this year. Think I can do it before the ball drops at midnight?

    1. I love it. It’s 4 hours long, but it doesn’t feel like it! Worth checking out for the things they added. The fates of characters that were wholly glossed over in the theater are completely addressed and there’s some sweet new bits to the action. It’s awesome!

  4. Doing these comments has really put a spotlight on my skewed viewing habits and how different they are from most people. Oh well, I like what I like!

Also, I’m perennially surprised how many movies you end up watching a year. 464 is so many!

    First time:
Test Tube Teens from the Year 2000 – stupid sex comedy fun.
The Punisher – the 1989 Dolph version that for some reason has a bad reputation. I thought it was great! And Tarantino ripped off tons from the end battle for the Crazy 88 fight in Kill Bill.
King Eagle – Great Chang Cheh wuxia film.
Death Race 2000 – Finally watching this true cult classic, and thoroughly enjoyed it!

    And I re-watched:
Timecop – Much better than I remember it being, this one was a blast. I will always love JCVD.

    1. Two different film festivals help pad the overall number, so too does eschewing TV programming for dvd’s most nights.

Heh, and I’ve never seen any of the films that you watched this week!

  5. I think I should watch Fanny and Alexander this week too.

Firsts: Modern Times– Awesome and ballsy.
Liberal Arts– Just made so much sense.
    Metropolis– So cool and iconic.
Monster– Love Theron. How did they make her so ugly, how?
The Perks of Being a Wallflower– Didn’t have anything resembling an American teenage, but still found it relatable. Lovely film, brilliant performances from Lerman and Miller.
    Dogville– Scary and excellent.
Life of Brian– I’m sorry but Biggus Dickus :’)
Winter Light– Great, and gorgeous to look at.
Broadway Danny Rose– I really want Woody to make another black and white film. So good.

Rewatched: The Avengers– Sleepover movie! I heart it so much.
The Bicycle Thieves– For film studies class. So tragic.

    1. Seeing as how you liked Perks, I vote you dig up my review on the film – I was rather proud of it. As for LIFE OF BRIAN, that was a first-time watch for me this year too. Scratched it off as part of my blind spot series. I really got the giggles any time Pilate was speaking (“The Wodewick sounds like a weal webel!”)

  6. THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is a wonderful romantic-comedy. It’ll definitely make my best of the year list.

There were some very good things about KILLING THEM SOFTLY but it doesn’t work. They hurt their message every time they repeated it on the soundtrack.

    1. I was getting taken to task for my dislike of KILLING THEM SOFTLY. Good to see I’m not completely out of my mind…

Surprising how good SILVER LININGS is, ain’t it?

  7. First-Timers: Alien 3, Wanderlust, Alien: Resurrection, The Landlord, and earlier today, Oliver Twist by Roman Polanski.

Re-Watches: We Need to Talk About Kevin (this was days before the tragedy that occur yesterday), Shall We Dance? (not the remake), Garden State, and The Tree of Life.

  8. Oh man, yeah, The Imposter was insane. One of my favorites from this year.

Quick question for ya. How did you get a Blu-ray/DVD for Flight already? It seems like that won’t be available for a few months at least.

    1. I’m a member of OFCS and with awards season upon us, the studios have been sending members screener DVD’s. It’s come in handy in allowing me to catch up with the glut of films that drop during year’s end (ANNA KARENINA, THIS IS 40, HITCHCOCK, etc)
