Everybody’s Talkin’ 6 – 4 (Chatter from Other Bloggers)

Seems as though I’m going through one of those stretches where the “to watch” pile seems neverending.

For starters, there’s the fact that there are four movies in theatres that i want to see right now (THE TROTSKY, GET HIM TO THE GREEK, HARRY BROWN, and SPLICE). Then there’s the pile of dvd’s I got myself with birthday loot (inc. ZOMBIELAND, A SERIOUS MAN, DISTRICT 9, and season two of Mad Men). Likewise a new rep theatre in Toronto has some good stuff scheduled over the next week (like UN PROPHETE, and THE WHITE RIBBON). Finally there are the screeners for NXNE that I must watch before that festival gets started…

Oh, and did I mention that summer has arrived in Toronto, and the last thing I seem to want to do is be stuck inside watching dvd’s?

“Blurg” as Liz Lemon would say.

Oh well, time for me to stop complaining and get on with this busy weekend of bbq’s, baseball, movies, and matineecasts. Thanks for listening to me gripe – I owe y’all a beer.

For your reading fulfillment, I give you…

Ross & Ross weigh the pros and cons of being a movie blogger (look for my thoughts on this next week).

THE KILLER INSIDE ME has been getting a lot of buzz since Sundance. Phil has a review up.

Movie Moxie, the queen of all film festivals is taking in The Worldwide Short Film Festival. Here’s her take on Day Two. James from TSS is checking it out too – here’s his thoughts on opening night.

Seems as though Univarn isn’t a fan of those with the attention span of a fruit fly.

John Gilpatrick reminds us that sequels tend to suck.

Enjoy!

  1. cheers as ever for the linkage Hatter, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the subject

  2. Major thanks for the linking! Good luck with your never ending lineup of things to watch. I recommend a lot of creative double features.

  3. There is no sign of a UK release of The Trotsky but it looks interesting. I won’t be rushing to see Get Him To The Greek, the trailer doesn’t look very good and Russell Brand is really annoying. Harry Brown is a nasty immoral revenge thriller that paints an untrue picture of inner city London. But it is well made and actually quite enjoyable. As a fan of Sarah Polley I have been looking forward to Splice for nearly two years. Unfortunately we still don’t have a UK release date yet. A Prophet is excellent I think you will like it. The White Ribbon is a truly stunning film or a cheep mindfuck depending on your point of view, I can’t make my mind up but it still made number eleven in my movies of last year. Oh and any season of Mad Men is always worth watching, the best TV show of recent years.

  4. Thanks for linking to my review, Mad Hatter. I hope you manage to plough through your unwatched pile of movies soon enough. It's definitely worth making the effort to see A Prophet and The White Ribbon, two of the past year's most impressively directed films.

I've got an alternative problem, as there isn't a lot coming up on the release schedules that's really exciting me at the moment. I've already seen most of the forthcoming month's most interesting releases, and the rest aren't inspiring a great deal of enthusiasm. Still, the NFT's month-long Kurosawa season kicks off this weekend, so there's that to look forward to.

Oh, and in response to Andy, I believe Splice has just had a July UK release date set, which is exciting news.

  5. The script for Harry Brown was quite good but I didn' realize it was playing in Toronto. I'm also pissed that Greenburg didn't open anywhere near me.

  6. May I ask how you got on a screener list? I assume its because of your previous festival coverage.

  7. @ Fitz… James from Toronto Screen Shots planted the seed in my brain to apply to film festivals happening around town for media accreditation.

Hot Docs was the first one I applied to, and they gave me accreditation. That gave me the idea to apply for NXNE.

If you never have applied for media at a local film festival, I'd suggest you do. Odds are, only the biggest of the big will turn you down (so Sundance or SXSW).

    Give it a go sometime!

  8. @ Ross… I should be able to do a post about it next week. Funny, some days I'm pulling my hair out for ideas to write about…other days I'm think four and five days in advance.

@ Univarn… Oh man – The thought of two-a-days makes me weary already. Stay tuned!

@ Fandango… Well now that I have all your thoughts on my entire "to-see" list it might well help me prioritize them! At the very least where the theatrical ones are concerned, having one or two in reserve helps me during those "off" weeks – like last weekend where I skipped PERSIA and SEX IN THE CITY for MICMACS.

@ Phillip… Anytime – have fun getting comments on The LAMB's "Blusterin" feature.

Like I just said to Andy, when you get to a spot where it seems like there's nothing out there to see, I vote you try to dig a little deeper. I'm not sure what the movie-going scene is like in your town, but if you have access to a lot of screens, this would be a good time to consider a doc or two, or perhaps a more indie film that's playing on screen 23 of 24.

@ Mike… I had no interest in GREENBURG, and only remembered HARRY BROWN from the chatter it got at the last TO Blogger Meet-Up…which you missed!

    @ Simon… I'll get to ya, I promise!

  9. Dammit Hatter, just because of that comment I'll be the first one there at the next one. I'll e mail you next week I promise.

  10. Harry Brown is great. That guy michael caine is good, he should be in more Stuff.
Why don't you set the tv up outside in the glorious summer sunshine hatter, kill two birds?

  11. @ Mike… No rush, we don't do them until month's end. When the invitation email goes out, I'll let you know.

@ Ross… TV outside??!! What is his hybrid voodoo you speak of?? I'm sure I'll see HARRY BROWN before the summer is out. It's a question of 'when' not 'if'.
