8 Replies to “84th Oscar Nominations

  1. KUNG FU PANDA 2 and PUSS IN BOOTS but not TINTIN?

The entire list feels lacking to me – a lot of the usual

    1. The lack of TINTIN feels weird. Part of me wonders if the animators see mo-cap as a cheat (I say that because I can’t remember if any mo-cap film has been nominated.

S’alright though – RANGO will take the prize and I’m fine with that.

      1. Mo-cap is an odd creature. The academy refuses to acknowledge it as real acting, but they also don’t see it as animation either. It’s screwed both ways from Sunday.

  2. The good: The Tree of Life making it to the best picture and director nom. Nick Nolte getting a nomination for Warrior, a criminally underrated movie. A Separation scores a well-deserved best original screenplay nod; I don’t think I have seen a better constructed story in the last 5 years.

The snub: No Albert Brooks (as he tweeted, they really don’t like him), Michael Shannon, Michael Fassebender, Charlize Theron, Cliff Martinez for the score of both Drive and Contagion.

The ugly: I haven’t seen any of the 5 best doc nominees, which is a first for me. And only 2 in the best foreign film category, I may have a chance to see one of those though…

    1. I was truly happy for TREE OF LIFE in both picture and director as it seemed to be downward-trending in the run-up to nominations morning. Given that it was my favorite film of the year, that should surprise nobody. I was also happy that a Canadian film made the cut for Best Foreign film for the second year running and now look forward to catching up with it.

As for the overlooked Albert Brooks (I despise the term “snub”), that caught me by surprise as well. I figured that DRIVE wasn’t the sort of film The Academy would go for on the whole, but thought that at the very least they’d like Brooks’ meaty part within it. Fassbender’s bit might have been too cold for many of them, and Theron’s too slight (but I love both and certainly agree that they are both nomination-worthy).

I’m crossed up with the docs too (I’ve seen one), and cannot believe PROJECT NIM didn’t make the cut. I’m hoping by the time the chips fall to catch up with at least three of the docs and three of the foreign.

      1. Monsieur Lazhar is a very good film. Well worth a watch, I think it’s playing at the Lightbox starting Friday. It probably won’t win the best foreign film (it’s going to be A Separation or In Darkness), but it’s good.

Project Nim should make the cut, but I don’t have too much hopes for the Doc branch. They make a fool out of themselves every year. Anytime, The Interrupters and Senna don’t make it to your short list, I can’t take those nominations seriously…

        1. The doc branch still mystifies me. I can’t remember the last year I had to do so much digging to hope to find more than one of them.

I’ll have a better grip on LAZHAR after tonight, as I’m catching the seven-ish show tonight at Lightbox.

  3. I’m disappointed that there was no nod for either of the Michaels (Fassbender and Shannon) or a nod for McCarthy’s work on Win Win. Then again, I’m never surprised either. The Artist is everything Hollywood loves about itself.
