Two

Lemme tell ya, it’s a sure sign that I’m having a slow day when I come back and put up a second post. Although with my PC on the blink, maybe I should soak it up and stop complaining.

Any-who…

Thought I’d go back to this week’s AFI special, and take a quick peek at the titles I think they missed in some categories. My thoughts after the jump.

Animation
There isn’t really a title on this list that I think shouldn’t be there, but if I could present one more title for consideration I’d have to suggest SLEEPING BEAUTY. As a work of art, it’s absolutely stunning – especially when compared to all the other classic Disney films. If you haven’t seen it in a while, give it another look.

Fantasy
Easily the category that frustrated me the most, since I don’t think of most of those movies as “fantasy” films. Especially not when matched up against something as delightful and heartwarming as THE PRINCESS BRIDE. It’s become such a modern classic, how in the world did it get shut out of this special?

Sci-Fi
Again, there aren’t any titles I can argue with, though I did feel that both BLADE RUNNER and ALIEN were seeded far too low. Meanwhile, how a list of the best sci-fi films could have been compiled without a nod to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is beyond me.

Sports
Is it just me, or do most other people not really see JERRY MAGUIRE as a sports movie?? I would have loved to have taken its ten spot and substituted it for MILLION DOLLAR BABY, which I think will age amazingly well. Maybe it was just too soon to anoint a three-and-a-half year old movie in such fashion. Next time AFI…next time.

Westerns
Truthfully, this was the category that I had seen the least from, so I can’t holler too loudly from my soapbox. However, ladies and gentlemen of the academy, I submit for your consideration TOMBSTONE. Just as the nine or ten, I’m not trying to compare Val Kilmer to John Wayne. I’m not that crazy. (Yes, “really”. I don’t care what you’ve heard).

Romantic Comedies
Oh come on now! How can we possibly laud ADAMS RIB, all the while turning our back on the THE APARTMENT. That’s just absurd. While I’m at it, I also felt that WHEN HARRY MET SALLY could have ranked higher. But really…come on now!

Epics
I still don’t really look at SCHINDLER’S LIST as an epic. With that empty spot, I could have easily supported BRAVEHEART, APOCALYPSE NOW, or A BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. What qualifies a movie as an “epic” anyway? I think the only criteria must have been Is the VHS version of this film two tapes? Yes?? Count it.

Oh well, until my AFI membership magically arrives one day, looks like I’ll have to stick to nay-saying. Anyone else have any thoughts on titles that were missed?

One Reply to “Two”

  1. I found it odd Jerry Maguire was in as a sports film. I’m still a little confused at why people love that film in general.

The Westerns seems to be one that is a little less viewed overall. They have some good choices there (I love Shane) but many greats are missing, likely due to them not being American films. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as well as Once Upon A Time in the West are both great.

I am with you on the confusing about the Epics. It’s like they didn’t want a ‘war’ category or something. All of them appear to be based in history, maybe that was what they were going for.
