The Difference

As the game clock ticks down on 2008, each day another city’s film critics name their year-end-bests. The only two with any major intrigue are New York and Los Angeles, mostly because of the size of their media circles. However there are one or two dozen others – Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, and so on – that are still interesting in their choices.

Then there’s my hometown of Toronto.

The Toronto Film Critics Association has only named “Best Of” lists for eleven years now, and while the titles they choose for best picture have rarely gone on to snag major awards, they at least come back with a very respectable choice each year. If not a movie that is “best picture worthy”, then certainly one that lands on most people’s list of the years top 20.

But not this year kids.

In a year where most kudos are being given to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, WALL-E, MILK, and THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON…The Toronto Film Critic Association thinks that none of those can hold a candle to……….WENDY AND LUCY.

The word you’re looking for is “Huh?

  1. Have you seen Wendy and Lucy? I believe it’s set to release here in the winter or earlier spring. I don’t remember if it was at TIFF.

I’m more excited to see who will win best Canadian film – all the choices are awesome!

  2. I think it’s a brave choice. Instead of piling on like all the other “me-too” awards, at least the TFCA is making a statement, saying you don’t have to have a $50 million dollar budget or a bunch of big stars to make a great film.

And you should see the film, by the way! 🙂
