Midnight Radio: Life in Technicolor part i

We now interrupt this regularly scheduled blog to talk documentaries…

Today begins a special series of my regular Matineecast, talking about all thing festival related. The format will be a little different than usual, namely episodes will be a bit shorter (though this one is normal length), and slightly more raw as I won’t be finessing them through editing the way I do my usual podcasts.

Hopefully though, you fine folks will find them entertaining and informative, and perhaps they will serve to give you a small taste of the festival.

We begin today with the festival preview conversation…

Here’s what’s in store in part one…

Runtime
41 minutes, 43 seconds

Up for Discussion

1. My brief introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY – Q & A with this episode’s guest, Bob Turnbull from Eternal Sunshine of The Logical Mind. (1:48)
3. COME TALK TO ME – Listener feedback on Matineecast Episode 12’s documentary question (8:41)
4. Bob & I look ahead and mention some docs we’re looking forward to seeing (16:41)
5. Bob & I make suggestions of docs we’ve seen that are worth checking out at this year’s festival (23:06)

Comments and feedback are welcome, and thank-you very much for listening.

Enjoy!

  1. Awesome podcast, great to hear you guys chat docs and see what you guys are looking forward too this year at the festival.

Docs really seem to have come a long way in the past few years and a lot have seem to adapted the 'creating a narrative through following an event, competition or challenge'. I feel like we see it again and again now, especially with kinda 'quirky' interests, but I still think it works really well.

Looking forward to hearing more about your festival experience! Should be a good one πŸ™‚

  2. Let us know what you think Simon…Hatter's on his 13th podcast now, but that was my first – so I crave feedback.

Shannon, I'll try to firm up my sched later today and send it. I'm still waffling on a few…

  3. Great job on the podcast, guys. Bob, my first film was 2001: A Space Odyssey too! My parents took me at the age of 3! Are you sure you didn't just steal that story from me?

  4. @ Simon… No comment on the content yet huh. Must be taking the scenic route home.

@ Shannon… Glad you enjoyed it and that we could provide a few laugh-out-loud moments.

Now prepare thyself, because you're someone I have in mind to do a guerilla podcast with at some point during the festival!

@ Bob… Be sure to post that schedule somewhere so we can compare.

@ James… Another cinematic baptism by Kubrick, eh? I suddenly feel so sheltered. Glad you dug our banter, thanks for giving it a listen!

Oh, and just becasue we were talking about it on the subway last night – EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP is supposed to open in Toronto on the 7th (heh…opposite IRON MAN!).

  5. Okay, so I was listening to the podcast and was about 1 hour into my commute home and was in a daze caused by road hypnosis when you mentioned my name (thanks for pronouncing it right, BTW) and I nearly drove off the road… haha… it literally scared me. I wasn't expecting it and for a second I thought my car was talking to me!
Great podcast, fellas. The one about the guerilla warfare kids sounds great… that's an interesting topic for a doc. The eating one sounded a bit boring… would've been cooler if they focused on the world of competitive eating versus the one guy with anorexia.
Also, was wondering if the docs are all Canadian? You mentioned a couple and they were based in or made by Canadians… are you getting European and American docs as well.
Keep up the good work… will go leave iTunes feedback right now!

  6. Heh, I do remember you telling me that James, but no I didn't steal it…B-) I would been older (6 or 7 maybe?). What you didn't hear was the beginning of my answer where I mentioned that my forst movie was likely a Disney film like "Sleeping Beauty". I think Hatter cut it because my brain was stuck in neutral.

Kai, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the festival has docs from all over the world (the full title of the fest is "Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival"). It's the biggest documentary fest in North America and I think the 2nd biggest in the world.

  7. Very cool, Bob… I'm a bit jealous that you guys have access to that and I don't! πŸ™‚
@ Hatter: tried leaving iTunes feedback and it's not letting me… sorry, man. If I can figure it out in the future, I will do so!

  8. @ Kai… (Who mispronounces that?) What was tripping you up about leaving a comment? I do know that you have to sign up for an iTunes account.

  9. Great as ever Hatter. Not really the opportunity to give my usual response so I’m going of at a tangent. As you were talking about the drumming doc it seemed like a great opportunity to go off at a tangent and give you a list of my favourite drummers:

    Ginger Baker
    Elvin Jones
    John Bonham
    Keith Moon
    Lars Ulrich

  10. Elvin Jones wasn't human. That's the only way to explain how he could do what he did.

I remember seeing an interview with Ginger Baker at his drum kit. He looked and sounded pretty stoned, but then he started playing a rhythm with one hand, a completely different one with the other and then proceeded to bring in two additional rhythms with each foot. All the while looking just as stoned and unphased as before. It was jaw dropping.

I love Neil as a drummer (especially the little patterns he comes up with), but he's dropped in my rankings as my musical knowledge has expanded. Especially when you start looking at Cuban or Indian music and their percussionists. Zakir Hussain, for example, is PHENOMENAL.

    And yes, that warranted capitalization.

  11. First off, everyone mispronounces my name… I get Kay, Kia and Kyle all the time… AARGH!
Second, I was signed in to my account. It kept saying unknown error occured in iTunes store. Please try again later… and I am signed in.
