On paper, there is nothing that excites me about this film.

While some of the revisionist faery tales we’ve been given over the last five years have hit some interesting notes for me, I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that the genre on the whole is more miss than hit. What’s more, it’s not like this particular offering is coming from a sexy creative force…not that that matters much in this genre (Sam Raimi, anyone?)

And yet, I can’t help but be a little bit curious.

Perhaps it’s that low, brooding rendition of “Once Upon a Dream” by Lana del Rey, or perhaps it’s the fact that this all comes from my favorite piece of classic animation…but I find myself wondering.

What say you folks? Hit in the making, or one more hot mess?

  1. I’m super duper excited, mainly because of Jolie. She looks and sounds perfect. Maleficent was my favourite part of Sleeping Beauty (DIE AURORA, DIE!). I just hope this isn’t another SWATH.

    1. Wow – multiple comments on the trailer post! That never happens!!

Jolie certainly looks like she was THE choice for the role, and having just rewatched the original a few months back, I can certainly see flourishes of her in the character.

I really hope Disney can stick the landing on this one.

  2. Lana del Ray’s rendition of the song makes the movie appear very sinister. I like Maleficent, she seems to be the only Disney villain that doesn’t seem to be crazy. Angelina Jolie looks good in the role, and I’m looking forward to seeing how she portrays her.

    1. Really cool cover, ain’t it? It’s amazing the way it turns from something so romantic into something so sinister and brooding by dropping it down a few octaves and slowing the tempo.

I’ll have to get that on my iPod in the near future.
