burn

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – there is nothing like a sick day to ratchet up your weekly tally.

This past sunny Saturday, while fighting a losing battle against an oncoming cold and a nasty sinus headache, my only movements were from the couch to the bed back to the couch. Luckily I did have some titles to keep me distracted, some of which were even first-time watches.

When  that little round of ickiness passed, I even managed to get out to a cinema three times over, which seems like a bit of a high total. Then again, looking forward to the next seven days, I’m about to go through that all over again! Gotts love the summer…when there are just too many things to see. Speaking of which, I gotta run to see the first screening – some Polish movie that Scorsese loves, so allow me to bid your adieu and point you towards this week’s round-up.

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
NEIGHBORS – The birthday screening, something lightweight to cap the day.
JERSEY BOYS – We’ll talk about this in two weeks.
EDGE OF TOMORROW – Goddamn – I did not expect to like this as much as I did!

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
FUNNY GAMES – Well that was bleak…
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 – Some cute moments, but not as good as its original.
LA VOZ DE LA SILENCIADOS – NXNE Screener. Quite a memorable movie, check in next week for details.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Seen Before
WINTER’S BONE – Can you believe it was just four summers ago that Jennifer Lawrence broke out as a star?
THE PRESTIGE – One of these days, I should really get around to watching THE ILLUSIONIST.
FRANCES HA – It’s quickly becoming my dream in life to dance with Greta Gerwig.
IN THE BEDROOM – Know what movie was way better than I remembered…?

Boxscore for The Year
117 First-Timers, 85 Re-Watched

How’s about you – seen anything good?

13 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched June 1 – June 6)

  1. That Frances Ha shot was one of my favourites of the year. It also made me want to buy white-framed glasses. I really need to rewatch Winter’s Bone. I have a feeling that I didn’t pay attention to it the first time.

It’s been a slow week movie-wise due to exams. But I did watch a lot of Buffy and am now watching the second season of Orange is the new Black. Both are awesome 😀 Women rock.

Firsts: Oculus– I liked the premise and acting but it fell apart towards the end.
The Grand Budapest Hotel– SO PRETTY AND FUN!! I loved it!

Rewatched:X-Men: DoFP– Got a chance to watch it again, this time in India. McAvoy, maaaaan! Oh and they censored the “bad words” here -.- They censored Jackman’s butt in both places though 🙁

    1. I thought Sophie had chrome glasses and that was what made them catch the light in this shot. However they did it, it sure is one groovy image, ain’t it?

I didn’t get into OITNB the first time around. Perhaps when I get some of my other TV projects done (Hannibal, Fargo, Fringe) I’ll go back and give it another try.

  2. Prestige is definitely the better of those two magician films. I can’t even recall what The Illusionist is about.

    For me, all first-time:

Marlowe – On one hand, a fair attempt at adapting Raymond Chandler’s The Little Sister. On the other hand, they added a Bruce Lee/Marlowe fight, it’s bathed in ridiculous ’60s swank and the title character isn’t anything like he should be. I dream of quality adaptations of Chandler’s amazing novels.

Nightbreed – Even though I know this was butchered by the studio, it’s one of the most unique horror fantasies out there. I read the book prior to watching it, so I think it made more sense than it should have. In any case, I LOVED it. Can’t wait for the extended cut to come out later this year.

  3. First-Timers: The Immigrant, Ida, Fast & Furious 6, Red 2, Mauvais Sang, This is 40, Year of the Dragon, R.I.P.D., 30 for 30 Soccer Stories: Hillsborough, and later tonight, L’Atalante.

Re-Watches: Changeling and Thor: The Dark World.

    1. I have been meaning to get around to L’ATALANTE for about two years now, and every time I do something steps into the way. Heck, I even had a ticket to see a screening of it, but forgot which day it was showing!

I might have to make that a 2015 blindspot.

  4. New to me:

Laurence Anyways – My journey in Dolan continues. Great flick.
Hope and Glory – Conflicted over this one…
The Lego Movie – People went nuts over this? Not my humour I guess.
Broadcast News – Was not what I was expecting at all…in a good way.
The Immigrant – Conventional plot, solid execution.

    Re-watch:
Fatal Attraction – Does not quite hold up, still entertaining though.

    1. I’ll remind you that Lego had the hordes crying out that #ryaniswrong. By hordes, of course, I mean half a dozen of our mutual friends.

How awesome was Broadcast News? One of my most favorite blindspot discoveries from last year.

  5. I watched a few this week.
Sin City – Too silly and I am not a fan of the look. And I like noir a lot. It just didn’t work for me.

After Hours – Strange film that I think it’s a lot deeper than it seems. I very much enjoyed it.

High Fidelity – Being a big music fan, I thought I’d like this a lot. It wasn’t bad just not for me.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – Generic, but I liked the cast and that it didn’t go in the direction it seemed to in the trailer.

Dead Again – Lovely thriller and a very light one. Emma Thompson was quite good looking in her early years. I think I like her even more now. I also noticed after watching this and Jack Ryan that Kenneth Branagh must really like the film Sorry Wrong Number to include it in both of these films.

Edge of Tomorrow – In theaters. Money well spent. Smart, funny. It’s gonna be hard to top this blockbuster this summer. In quality I mean.

Finally, I just finished Season 2 of Orange Is The New Black. It was so much fun and addictive. I couldn’t learn for my exams properly because of it. It was brilliant and a lot of fun.

      1. It’s interesting that you read the book every summer. You must really like it. I should read it someday. I will be listening to your podcast.

  6. Solid crop of films. I too liked Edge of Tomorrow WAY more than I thought I would. In the Bedroom… man, I cherish that film. It has had such a huge impact on my own filmmaking career. Simple, elegant, unflinching. I love it.

    1. You know those films you remember liking, but then you revisit them years later and realize they’re even better than you remember?

      In The Bedroom.
