Frankenweenie

For a second, I was going to say “I don’t know how this turned into a four-screening week”, but then I remembered that we’re walking in high cotton where theatrical offerings are concerned. Even  then, I still haven’t got around to the new Almodovar!

However, this is the week that makes me grin since it got me up past 52 screenings on the year.

This isn’t a first of course, both of the last two years found me in a cinema over 120 times. Still, I can’t help but wonder sometimes how crazy this seems to the average person. I mean, how often does a regular schmoe go to the movies? Four…maybe five times a year? To those people, the very concept of being in those red velvet seats more than once a week must seem nuts.

But what if I had a different habit? What if I was more of a drinker, and I went to the bar after work two or three times a week? I doubt anyone would bat an eye at such a pattern. There’s nothing all that crazy about going and knocking a few back on Friday and Saturday every week, is there? But tell people you’re seeing a double feature and suddenly you get raised eyebrows.

Well, I’ll keep my liver intact and nosh on popcorn instead. Once a week…twice a week…or “more”…where weeks like this are concerned…

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
THE HEATAnyone else notice the New Kid on The Block (one of Mullins’ brothers)?
THE WAY WAY BACK – I want Sam Rockwell to be my best friend.
SHORTS NOT PANTS, Summer 2013 – I didn’t win The Playstation that was raffled off. I’m never gong back.
ONLY GOD FORGIVES – This is gonna be a fun podcast.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
BONJOUR TRISTESSE – Coulda swore this would be Frencher.
KISS ME, STUPID – I finally found a Billy Wilder movie I wasn’t crazy about. Go figure.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
PLANET TERROR – Still delightfully icky.
DEATH PROOF – I’d dig this film more if QT wasn’t so apeshit about VANISHING POINT.
DRIVEThree guesses why I watched this?
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE – The “Super Freak” scene will never not put me in a good mood.

The Story of Film
Chapter Six – Hey cool, I’m starting to know more of the films Cousins is discussing!
Chapter Seven – Pretty sure I’m ready to get into Bergman now.

14 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched July 13 – July 19)

  1. First Timers: Husbands & Wives, High Noon, Stagecoach (for the Blind Spot Series), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and later tonight, High Plains Drifter.

The only re-watch I saw was Hiding Out.

    1. I keep meaning to watch STAGECOACH, and I keep forgetting. It’s one of films always brought up when discussion turns to how 1939 was an amazing year in film history.

Hopefully your blindspot entry will prompt me to finally pull the trigger.

  2. Billy Wilder has so many fantastic movies that it’s hard to believe there are bad ones, but they do exist! I don’t remember anything about Kiss Me, Stupid, but apparently I gave it three stars on Netflix in 2005.

For me this was a light week (as will next week, most likely):

    First time:
    Spiritual Kung Fu
    Dredd
    Things to Come

    Re-watch:
    The Naked Kiss

    1. It picks up steam around the time the actual screwball situation begins to play itself out, but the entire first act is a chore. Kim Novak is a bombshell though, and it has the typical great final line.

I know the others I still have to see might also be letdowns, but I always hope for good things.

  3. Shitty week.
Firsts: The End of the World– For the podcast. It was pretty impressive for a 1916 movie.
    Pacific Rim– AWESOME!!!!
Only God Forgives– I liked it. Had some interesting ideas in place.

Rewatched: Melancholia– Podcast purposes. It was much less depressing this time.
The Karate Kid– It was coming on TV.

    1. It was very well done visually and Kidman and Wasikowska were grand as well. My only problem with the film was as a cat-and-mouse thriller, Goode never had the upper hand, which makes the thriller aspect a bit off.

    2. That’s about the same mindset I had when I came away from it. My wife and I actually had a short, fun discussion about it if you’re interested (the episode is embedded in the sidebar)

  4. To renew your faith in Wilder you should watch Witness For The Prosecution, if you haven’t already.

It’s pulpy and old fashioned but very entertaining.

    1. Saw PROSECUTION (and loved it!). Of all Wilder’s directorial films, here’s what I have left:

      MAUVAISE GRAINE
      THE EMPEROR WALTZ
      IRMA LA DOUCE
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
      AVANTI!
      THE FRONT PAGE
      FEDORA
      and
      BUDDY BUDDY

  5. “I want Sam Rockwell to be my best friend.” Doesn’t that movie make you think about how your life might have turned out had Sam Rockwell been your eccentric mentor?
