Frankenweenie
I found myself in a bit of a mood this week. With so many spaces dedicating time and space to wrapping up 2013 already, I find myself thinking back on the year that was and thinking about gaps. That’s how I ended up watching both THE GRANDMASTER and THE CONJURING (good times, in both cases). There are a few more I’m curious to get to as well, namely LAURENCE ANYWAYS, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, and BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR…but time will tell if I get the chance to catch up with them before the ball drops.

What about you folks – I know Robinson is feverishly working on playing catch-up, but anyone else? Anybody else have a checklist they’re working off? For that matter, is there anything that I haven’t seen yet that I should absolutely make a priority before getting sloshed on the 31st?

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
AMERICAN HUSTLE – I’m still grinnin’. Thoughts on this will be posted this week.
HER – A lot of thoughts on this will likewise be posted this week.
THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG – I wish I knew how to quit you.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
ANINGAAQTechnically I watched this a few weeks back, but I forgot to log it.
THE SAVAGES – For Matineecast purposes.
THE GRANDMASTER – And to think, I almost closed the book on 2013 without this.
CASTELLO CAVALCANTI – Is it time for BUDAPEST HOTEL yet?
THE CONJURING – Might have been a bad idea to watch this right before bed.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEYI’d forgotten a lot of this.
ABOUT SCHMIDT – Speaking of things I’d forgotten.
A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION – 2014 might be my Altman year.
BATMAN RETURNS – Fun times, but awful silly, no?

10 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched Dec 7 – Dec 13)

  1. Argh, I still need to see The Grandmaster myself. I have the HK Blu-ray ready to go, just haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    First time:
King Boxer AKA Five Fingers of Death
    Adventure in Sahara
    Teen Knight

    And I re-watched:
    The Young Master
    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

  2. New to me:

The Lone Ranger – It was decent, not as bad as many had led me to believe.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 – Great adaptation, even better than Part One.

Her – I foresee this being a film that I will routinely revisit when it hits Blu-ray.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – Not bad, not great. Just there.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunter – Easily one of the worst films I have seen in a while.

    Re-watched:

Little Mermaid – Example #1 of why I kind of miss old school animation.

My Neighbor Totoro – Example #2 of why I kind of miss old school animation.

    1. I’m beginning to regret that my schedule over the next two weeks is so busy that I won’t get over to the Lightbox for the Ghibli films…especially since they’ll be showing some of the ones I didn’t catch on my syllabus.

Great seeing you at HER by the way – I don’t get to see that many movies with ya these days, though that did make two in a month!

  3. Did you see the American version of The Grandmaster or the Chinese version?

Anyway, busy week; catching up to do my year end list.

The Attack: I could do without the ending. But still decent

The Informant: Solid doc, a B version of THE IMPOSTER

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty: The best looking bad movie of the year.

Blackfish: Don’t see anything special about this one.

Computer Chess: Not my cup of tea.

    Rewatch:

    My Neighbor Totoro: Just wonderful.
Battle Of Algiers: One of the most important film in the last 50 years.

    1. I saw the Chinese version – I can’t imagine how the American cut would play, nor can I understand why anyone would want to cut what I watched down to time.

If you dig back a bit, Algiers was one of my blindspots this year, and certainly a film that affected me with its brilliance.

As for Blackfish, I’m with you. What’s the fuss?

  4. Which version of The Grandmaster did you see, the 130-minute full-length Chinese cut, the 123-minute international cut, or the godawful Harvey Scissorhands 108-minute version?

This week, I only saw first-timers in: Days of Being Wild, Dallas Buyers Club, Philomena, Flight, Fallen Angels, wkw/tk/1996@7’55″hk.net, and Early Spring. Yeah, a lot of Wong Kar-Wai for my Auteurs piece on him coming this month (hopefully).

    1. Per my previous comment, the 130 minute cut.
I believe I’m woefully undereducated on Wong kar-Wai; I’ve only seen CHUNGKING and MOOD. Perhaps I’ll have to go on a bender in the new year!

  5. I still have a very long way to go and have come to terms with the fact that this year (new baby, new job, finishing grad school) is not the year where I’ll feel caught up at all. Still, I did just get a bunch of DVDs from the library of films from earlier in 2013, so I’m going to watch a lot of these in the next week or two.

GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK (re-watch) – Love this movie so much.
EUROPA REPORT – Interesting and pretty realistic sci-fi
FAST & FURIOUS – Has its moments, but it’s pretty dumb
COMPUTER CHESS – Liked the style, but it felt like it would have worked better as a short film.
MAN OF STEEL – Is it possible for the last 40 minutes to ruin a movie? Not completely, but it didn’t help.
