Frankenweenie

Funny thing: If you’d asked me a few weeks ago, I probably could have guessed that this week would have brought a low tally in terms of titles watched. Between Easter this past weekend and the beginning of the baseball season, I just knew that distraction would abound.

Now that said, I didn’t think the tally would be this low.

I’m pretty sure I’ve racked up a five once or twice in the past, but all in all, this is about as little watching as I think I’ve ever done since I started keeping track two years ago – and that’s alright. Between reacquainting myself with the boys of summer, and spending time with my family, I can’t think of any better reason to give movies a miss for a few days.

Let’s see what happens next week!

Here’s The Week at Hand…

42 – Not allowed to say too much yet, but it was what I thought it’d be.

RATCATCHER – For Matineecast purposes

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
SKYFALL – When it’s time to amuse the whole family, accept no substitutes.
ON THE WATERFRONT – Lordy that Criterion blu-ray looks purdy!

How’s about you – seen anything good?

14 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched Mar 30 – Apr 5)

  1. First-Timers: Saute ma ville, Tiny Furniture, Red Road, Wuthering Heights (2011 film), and One of Our Aircraft is Missing.

Re-watches: William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Something to Talk About, October Sky, and Stepmom.

    1. I actually saw SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT in theatres if you can believe that. I’ve been meaning to give that new adaptation of WUTHERING HEIGHTS a look forever now. Any good?

  2. I will be interested to hear what you have to say about Ratcatcher. Have you seen Lynne Ramsay’s other movies?

    1. The only other movie of hers I’ve seen is WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. The Matineecast with the discussion on RATCATCHER is up now, so go give a listen.

  3. All first time:

    The Three Musketeers (2011)
    The Swift Knight
    White Slave
    Flight
    Jigsaw
Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor

    1. When I sat down to watch THE THREE MUSKATEERS with my friends, I said aloud “Even money says we get a sword pointed at us in 3-D within fifteen minutes.

Sure enough – right on the fifteen minute mark!

  4. I realize that I’ve missed a few weeks. I’m about half a dozen behind you, but I caught up a lot this week.

    New to me:
All the King’s Men: Another step on the quest to watch all the Best Picture winners
Mad Ron’s Prevues from Hell: Really fun trailers, but the rest of it was crap
Cache: Not as tense as I wanted it to be, but solid Haneke
The Piano Teacher: This one, though, was pretty hateful
The Man from Laramie: Too melodramatic and needlessly cruel
Floating Weeds: Ozu’s films are beautiful, but S-L-O-W
The Killing Fields: Best of the week, possibly best of the year so far

    Rewatches:
Rain Man: I’d forgotten how much I like this film
Trekkies: Goofy, but special in its own way

      1. I enjoyed it in no small part because of where it found its focus. Really, though, it was a pretty solid week all around. When a good Best Picture winner ends up maybe as the third or fourth favorite from a week, I figure I’m doing something right.

  5. Ryan, you still outdid me with your four screenings. I had three, all first-time viewings:

Our Idiot Brother – Watched this randomly from the DVR, and it was okay but forgettable.

The Secret World of Arrietty – Charming little animated film that had a great atmosphere. My daughter got a bit restless, but I enjoyed it.

Zero Dark Thirty – Finally caught up with this last night, and it was an excellent procedural. It was purposely cold and hard to crack at times, but the technical precision is very strong. Jessica Chastain was remarkable.

    1. Actually, I did forget about a fourth movie that I watched, Hesher. I’d heard great things from other bloggers and found it interesting, but also a little underwhelming.

        1. I’m liking it more as I think closer about it, which is sort of the opposite of LIFE OF PI, which I also saw recently. The deliberate pace of ZERO DARK THIRTY had me dragging a bit since it was late at night, but I feel like it’s a really strong achievement.

  6. I don’t know how but I keep forgetting to comment on these posts for the last couple of weeks.

Firsts: The Hunger– Felt like watching more Bowie. I miss vampires being sexy.
    Tokyo Story– Really poignant.
Chungking Express– Plain awesome although I almost resent it for getting “California Dreaming” stuck in my head.
    Tape– Uncomfortable and quite good.
Shadows and Fog– Woody was trying too hard.
Ginger and Rosa– Very pretty and well-acted.
Touch of Evil– Was watching this when news of Ebert’s death broke. Pretty good film though.

Rewatched: American Psycho– Hadn’t watched it in the longest time. Hip to be square <3
Sleepless in Seattle– I adore this film.
Django Unchained– Was able to still watch it in the theatres when QT turned 50.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World– Just ‘cuz.
Moonrise Kingdom– I hadn’t opened the DVD since I bought it. Such a gorgeous film, man.
Drive</b- HAD to watch it after Only God Forgives trailer came out. I really really really love this film.
