21 Thoughts on TIFF 2011

  • Twenty Five screenings in total, including my pit-stop at a Cineplex for DRIVE
  • I’ve discovered that linemates get exponentially happier to see you depending on the baked goods you have brought.
  • Speaking of those linemates, I only watched four of the twenty-five selections on my programme without any company.
  • It’s hard not to generalize when a Cuban film starts with a shot of two dudes on a raft.
  • I’m beginning to believe that TIFF selections by Michael Winterbottom are destined to either dazzle me or bore.
  • My God is Anna Kendrick tiny!
  • A few of y’all are kicking around the idea of coming to town next year. If this year is an indicator of things to come – do it!
  • Feels like I didn’t get enough foreign fare into the schedule this year. Must work on that for next year.
  • Love that I managed to make two new friends this week. Here’s hoping it’s not the last I’ve heard from either.
  • Never argue with Steve McQueen.
  • It’ll be nice to start leaving my pen and notebook at home again instead of toting ’em into every movie.
  • The only thing that sucks more than going to the wrong theatre is losing a ticket outright.
  • Twitter has irrevocably changed the festival experience.
  • A four-screening day on four hours sleep is the very definition of a bad idea.
  • I’ve learned to love sitting closer to the screen.
  • Judging by everyone else’s reaction, there is no foolproof way to build your schedule.
  • I wonder if TIFF will get more screenings starting on time next year.
  • By the way, check in tomorrow for my thoughts on DRIVE.
  • Anybody got any suggestions for what I should watch now that I have free time again?
  • My three favorite films stand as THE ARTIST, TYRANNOSAUR, and THE SKIN I LIVE IN.
  • Finally thanks to everyone who dropped by this site so often this week. Lots of regular content still to come as the fall goes on…y’all come back now y’hear?

  1. I think this is where you should do a Top 5 … your Top 3 will inevitably factor into my own choosings at London Film Festival. Though I think TYRANNOSAUR was here last year… and THE SKIN I LIVE IN has already been released here too …

how you would rank them would thoroughly interest me.

    1. My top five (or the top 20% as it happens for a 25-film slate)

      THE ARTIST
      TYRANNOSAUR
      THE SKIN I LIVE IN
      THE IDES OF MARCH
      JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME
(The next two, to account for the fact that two have already been released in UK would be SHAME and INTRUDERS)

  2. Dug the coverage Hatter. I wish I could be one of those people who makes the trek up next year, but I fear it may still be a little while (and one very expensive plane ticket) away for me. One day for sure though.

    1. A lot of what you got to dig into at MIFF had me pretty jealous too. I can’t recall, did you cover it as press? If not, you should chase down acreditation next year so you can ask filmmakers some hard-hitting questions.

  3. Great idea for a final TIFF thoughts, I might do something similar w/ TCFF which I’m covering this week. I know you’re busy but mind popping by FC a couple of times and give me some pointers about my film fest coverage? I’m juggling work and blogging about the event all week long 😀
