Since the turn of the calendar, there’s been a lot of talk regarding the most anticipated films of the year. Unsurprisingly, the titles mentioned include THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, THE HOBBIT, THE AVENGERS, and new entries from directors like Alfonso Cuaron, Quentin Tarantino, and P.T. Anderson.

Almost nowhere will you find mention of anticipating the new Spider-Man movie.

I’m not here to say that such ambivalence is any sort of crying shame, bit it’s truly interesting to see a franchise that was once one of the hottest properties in Hollywood reduced down to a collective shoulder-shrug to the audience at large. My guess is that the grumpiness over an unnecessary reboot, and the bitter aftertaste of the last outing has left people wary of all things eight-legged.

That said, I must admit that this trailer leaves me a little curious. Perhaps all that talent involved can rescue something from the rubble…or maybe the bug is about to be squashed once and for all…

  1. I somehow get the feeling that you and me both showed up to the prom wearing the same dress… awkward. Not to mention the fact that we both wrote roughly the exact same blog post for today! (bit of crossdressing humor to brighten up your day there)

I suppose this is a perfect opportunity for me to whip out the old “great minds think alike” addage. I don’t often use it, mostly because I’ve seen minds nobody would classify as even a quarter great think alike, but in the case of you and me I think we’re on safe ground.

    1. In a word: Money.

The talent involved with the previous franchise was getting too expensive (Raimi + Maguire + Dunst + Franco = aprox $60M before you’ve shot a single frame).

I don’t think the new timeline had to start at 00:00, but will happily see what they have to offer.

  2. I’m still not 100% sold on this. The trailer highlights a lot of good elements– namely Garfield and Stone, who look like they work well together, as well as some great-looking web-slinging and very welcome irreverence and humor– but the Lizard looks horrible. Maybe what we see here isn’t what we’ll see in the finished theatrical cut. I certainly hope so.

More concerning to me is that the film still seems to be pointing toward the tired “destiny” theme, which isn’t at all what Parker’s story should be about. He’s never been a character of destiny. But I’m more willing to give this a chance now than I was after watching the last teaser.

    1. Agreed on all counts. If anything, I’m glad to see that some of my misgivings from the first trailer seem to be settled in this one, which leaves me hopeful that any misgivings which remain will be settled by the final film.

At the very least, it’s an encouraging step for a somewhat risky endeavour…
