14 Replies to “82nd Oscar Nominations

  1. This year seems to be Cameron vs. Bigelow. Can you imagine their divorce-lawyers trying to figure out this mess?

    go hurt locker!

  2. It somehow escaped me that Bigelow and Cameron were former spouses. WOW, what a showdown that'd be. David vs. Goliath in more ways than one!

How early did you wake up today, Hatter? I'm considering taking Monday after Oscar off so I can blog all night on it 🙂

  3. This is pretty much what I expected…
I'm glad to see Colin Firth nominated for Best Actor! Although its strange that A Single Man didn't make it into best cinematography or Art Direction…or Director. I can't spot any real surprises though…

  4. @ RTM… I did in fact get up earlier than usual, but it was because I had to stop at a tailor on the way into work!

For the big eight categories, I typed up most of the usual suspects last night, and then did a last-second tweak as the nominees were announced.

Tomorrow oughta be a long night though…and you'll find out why on Thursday morning.

  5. Just filed my article for LAMB devours the Oscars. Now I can sit back, relax, look at the other categories (and do some paid work).

As for the nominations: It’s a shame to see Watchmen overlooked in the technical categories. It is great to see Tarantino and Hornby get writing nominations, would like to see them win their respective categories. Ultimately I will be relatively happy if Hurt Locker beets Avatar in Best Picture or Best Director.

Ps, love how you did four of the foreign films in their own language and one in English! I think the short snappy title you were looking for is: Das weisse Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte.

  6. @ Vanessa, yeah I agree, the noms are quite predictable this year, though I didn't think The Blind Side would be singled out. I mean I liked it but not exactly an Oscar-caliber.

I've got to see Hurt Locker and Basterds before March 7 so I can properly comment on 'em. I'm not even sure if I'll blog about my Oscar reaction yet, probably just venting that Sharlto Copley didn't get nominated 🙁

Hmm, you're making me curious what's happening tomorrow nite, Hatter 🙂

  7. If Sandra Bullock wins that Oscar, I will have seen it all. The Blind Side as Best Picture almost gave me a stroke 🙁 Oh well…

  8. @ Number Six… WATCHMEN was way too sloppy to get any awards love, even amongst the techs. If DARK KNIGHT was largely ignored, WATCHMEN had no hope.

@ RTM… You'll have to log on to my blog Thursday morning to find out now, won't ya?

PS – They're both awesome, but start with HURT LOCKER.

  9. Although overlooked in the picture/director categories you can’t say The Dark Knight was overlooked in the technical awards. It had nominations for: Sound Editing, Art Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Makeup, Sound and Visual Effects. The only one it won was Sound Editing so along with the Heath Ledger Oscar everyone remembers it got two.

Although watchmen isn’t as good it is still deserving of the nominations, in think it just came out too early in the year for people to remember it.

  10. Yesterday I was on a tear about what and who got snubbed, but today I'm much more rational and won't make you sit through that whole debate again. Do you think anyone but "Avatar" has a shot for Best Picture?

And my next question is why in the hell didn't Abbie Cornish get a Best Actress nomination for "Bright Star"? And NOTHING for "The Brothers Bloom"?

Grrr. No more rants. I'm done. I promise.

  11. @ Everyone… As you might have noticed, an Oscar episode of The Matineecast was posted this morning and my guest and I discuss many of these very points.

@ Number Six… Right you are – my bad.

@ Meredith… Sadly Best Actress was all but settled by the time nomination morning rolled around, the only x factor to be determined was settled with Helen Mirren.

I think right now AVATAR is actually playing the game down a goal. HURT LOCKER has a swell of support and has damn near run the table this awards season. The only question now is whether Oscar voters feel the same.

Oh, and my only big gripe with a missing nomination was where (500) DAYS OF SUMMER is concerned.

  12. You know, I find it somewhere between sad and infuriating that, long before they even announced there'd be 10 Best Picture nominees, I had labeled the season that followed the 2009 Oscars as one of the weakest I have in recent memory. Every year I go out of my way to see every nominated picture in all major categories…but this year? Hardly anything came out that I even wanted to see, Oscar-worthy or not.

I don't like to use the word "ironic," because Alanis has left me perpetually confused as to its proper usage, but you get what I'm sayin'.

I'll have to look at the list again, but I think I've seen 4 of the 10 Best Picture contenders…and this year it's really, really going to be a fight with myself to see some of the others. In past years, that was never the case; there might have been one or two movies, across all categories, that I dragged myself to see (and usually ended up enjoying!).

Sigh. There WERE ten worthy films last season. The Academy, as usual, has missed the boat.

P.S. I will officially be launching my own movie blog in the next couple of weeks, so here's hoping I'll be around to comment more often on your posts!

  13. Just watched In the Loop and Up in the Air.

I wish I'd watched them in reverse order though. I got a little teary during Up in the Air. I love how GC picks age appropriate roles. He's not 50 and kicking terrorist a$$; he's pushing 50 and trying to figure out what the hell happened to his life. I thought it was a very genuine perfomance.

I have to say, I thought In the Loop was VERY funny. Can't wait to hear your take on it.

  14. @ EHCH… Get that blog up and going, very curious to hear your take on the movies you see. Just gotta make sure you blog a bit more regularly, yes?

@ Danger… Just rented IN THE LOOP, so expect a reaction out of me soon. Now go listen to the Oscarcast and lemme know what you think!
