I’m keeping things short and sweet today. While I usually post a trailer on Wednesdays, I couldn’t find a new one that excited me all that much. In its stead, I thought I’d put up a post dedicated to the feedback question on the latest episode of The Matineecast which many of you might not have heard yet, since the feed has moved (here for iTunes, here for RSS).

But since it’s “that time of year”, I thought I’d spark the conversation a bit further with my keyboard. So –

Come Talk to Me:
What DVD’s, Blu-Rays or other such movie geek items are you hoping to find under your tree this yer?

  1. Well, I know for a fact I’m getting Blu-Rays of TRON/TRON Legacy and the complete Battlestar Galactica because I told my parents about the lightning deals last week on Amazon. I think that might be it. Everything else I asked for was a new iPod and some books. But I tend to just ask for money and then shop for what I want later when it’s on sale.

  2. Hiya! Happy Holidays!
ThinkGeek / HerUniverse etc geeky items are just WOWZA!
There’s a lightsabre candle holder that made my eyes POP!
as for videos, it’s mostly filling out collections:
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
    HP: DH 1/2
    Your Highness
    Game of Thrones
and many more! How about you? Hope the bounty is plentiful and geeky!

    1. (Welcome to The Matinee!)

Quite the list you have there. Thanks for reminding me of Game of Thrones. I’d forgotten that was coming out before Christmas, so I never suggested it to anyone as a gift idea. It might have to be a Boxing Day gift from me to me.

  3. The wife and I splurged on our Blu-ray gift to ourselves already – LOTR³ ex. ed.
    50 smackers on Amazon.ca. Can’t beat that.

      1. Not particularly. Besides the HARRY POTTER SAGA on blu-ray, or FRINGE 3rd season.

I think more than anything, I’d like time to *watch* the stuff I have. It’s sad that it took me nearly 3 months to get around to watching the APOCALYPSE NOW blu-ray you gave me for my birthday, and I still have to find some time to watch the REDUX and the HEART OF DARKNESS doc.

Babies, man… time vampires. I love my daughter, but I still have 3 weddings to edit!

        *sob*

    1. I grabbed TREE OF LIFE a month or two back when it dropped here. I actually started panicking when I watched it because the sound was all crackly. Turns out my player just needed a firmware update.

Hope you get your mitts on it – it looks stunning!

  4. The only 2011 release I have to have is HP7.2, but I’d also like X-Men: First Class, Horrible Bosses and Crazy Stupid Love. I almost never ask for older titles; I just keep a wish list of those and buy them for myself when I randomly come across them in the store or a good deal on Amazon.

      1. Hardly. I remember you raving about it during one of your RI guest spots, stunned neither Jess nor I had senn it yet. It’s a damn fine movie, no shame in wanting to own it.

  5. I very seldom ask for things in the same year they came out. I blame this on the Lord of the Rings special edition box sets which always came out of the following year and thus trained me as a child to wait until the better edition of things I want come out.

All the same these are some of the things I’m asking for this year (movie-wise)

    1. Eclipse Series 7: Postwar Kurosawa (I always ask for one Kurosawa movie – figured I’d try and beat the punch and get a boxset of his films since this one runs rather cheap now)
    2. The Secret In Their Eyes (after my big score for this earlier this year I’m really chomping at the bit to watch it again)
    3. The Third Man (I’d watch this movie a hundred times just for the cuckoo clock speech)

    Game-wise:
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Love me some Zelda)

    TV-wise:
    1. Band of Brothers Complete Season (I’ve been asking for this for about five years now, but I think my odds of getting it this year are actually pretty good)
    2. Cowboy Bebop Complete Series (Because how can I call myself an anime fan and not own the definitive anime tv show?)

  6. I realized a few months ago that I don’t own nearly enough of my favorite live-action Disney films. I hope I get Blank Check, Angels in the Outfield, First Kid, Hocus Pocus, Man of the House, A Kid in King Arthur’s Court, The Big Green, and Jungle 2 Jungle!

  7. This is kind of a horrible thing to say, but I don’t ask for any such things at Christmas. I no longer play any computer/video games, since I burned out on them spectacularly a number of years ago. After 12 years of quite literally doing little else, it was time for a clean break. I don’t ask for films, either. The main reason is that the films I’d really like to get tend to be odd and difficult to find, and thus frequently expensive. As far as television…well, I don’t watch anything.

I’m not trying to be a pedant or a bore here (or a snob). I prefer to shop for geek stuff on my own.

    1. I agree with you. I don’t ASK anyone for anything. But what I guess the spirit of this post (and the commercial version of Christmas) is what you’d want to like to get if you could magically get it.

I’m not expecting anyone to get me anything like Skyrim (mentioned in prev comment that I’d prb end up buying it for myself).

      1. Steve… Not horrible to say at all, and I think Andrew sums it up well. I ask only to make conversation, and get a sense for what movies – new or otherwise – people liked enough to own.

Getting things isn’t the point of the holidays. You’re right to point that out, and given the option to get every DVD Criterion has ever pressed or spending time away from work with my friends and family, I’d choose the latter (begrudgingly … I kid!).

        So well said.

        BUT!

If you *could* ask Santa for one of those older, hard to do d movies, which would you choose?

        1. All of ’em, of course!

I said it was a “horrible” thing to say, not for the noble reasons you suggest, but because, well, I like doing that shopping on my own. Most people have learned it’s just easier to let me buy my own geek stuff. It’s purely a selfish motive.

  8. All I want for Xmas are Criterion DVDs for the Trois Couleurs trilogy and Rushmore as well as some remastered DVDs of films by Andrei Tarkovsky that aren’t on Criterion.

  9. Well I don’t really buy DVD/Blu-Rays like ever but I guess to answer the question, I would love to have these:

    – Midnight in Paris (coming in a couple weeks!)
    – In a Better World
    – The Thin Red Line
    – The entire Breaking Bad set

    1. Midnight in paris comes out mere days before the 25th too – would make a handy last-minute gift. Just curious, why don’t you buy DVD/blu-rays? And are there any other movie related gifts you’d like?

  10. I usually don’t get DVDs for Christmas, unless I’m there in the shop with my parents when they buy it. Like last year, my mother bought me Inception on the 8th, and I was allowed it until the 24th, but then I had to wrap it up and stick it under the tree for Christmas Day. My mum is so cool.

    Anyway, I’d love:
    -The Virgin Suicides
    -Senna
    -Sunrise
    -Quiz Show
    -Strange Days
    -Hunger
-Pulp Fiction (why do I not own this one?!)

I’ll probably just get money to buy them, as I plan to go on a big DVD shopping spree when I go to Australia 🙂

    1. You have to buy it and wrap it? Damn – that ain’t right. (I do agree with you not being able to watch it until the 24th though)

Part of me wants HUNGER just because I’ve been wanting to see it for months and my local video place has lost their copy.
