True Colors

A little bit of Oscar news on a Friday morning. The short list for Animated Feature nominees has been released…

  • ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS
  • AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE
  • BEE MOVIE
  • BEOWULF
  • MEET THE ROBINSONS
  • PERSEPOLIS
  • RATATOUILLE
  • SHREK THE THIRD
  • THE SIMPSONS MOVIE
  • SURF’S UP
  • TEKKONKINKREET
  • TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

…kinda feels like they named every animated movie from the year, doesn’t it?
Where it gets interesting is the fact that only three of these titles will make the cut. So what gets ditched? BEE MOVIE has already underachieved at the box office, a nomination snub would sting even harder (pardon the pun). BEOWULF looks amazing, but when Zemeckis tried this technique before (THE POLAR EXPRESS) he came up empty handed. PERSEPOLIS is a beautiful movie, but can a foreign language black and white stand up to this sort of competition? RATATOUILLE seems like a lock (Pixar has yet to miss a nomination), but reaction to it was slightly muted. SHREK THE THIRD felt like a cash-in, could we watch the SHREK series go from Award winner, to Award nominee, to also-ran? And what of The Simpsons? True that feature wasn’t what everybody had hoped it could be, but with the monumental place Simpsons holds in animation history, can it possibly be left off the ballot?

What do you think folks – which three of these will be left standing on nomination morning?

Opening This Week…

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (My review will be up soon)
P2 (Maple Leafs nothing – still funny)
FRED CLAUS
(Vaughn tries to one-up Will Ferrell – reviewed here)
LIONS FOR LAMBS (And a player to be named later)
BEOWULF (Very curious to see how this does)

  1. Shrek 3 will be ignored as a cash grab.
Boewulf will get glossed over just like Polar.
Bee Movie doesn’t have the kind of support.

    – PERSEPOLIS is a lock for a nom and will likely win (Spirited Away proved that the art is valued over success and TRIPLETS and HOWL’S still got noms)
    – RATATOUILLE is also a lock for a nomination but having every Pixar film nominated since its inception and still only two years off back-to-back wins, they’ll deny it to not make it ‘the Pixar award’.
    – SIMPSONS will take spot 3 for commercial success and being a bit edgier than the other two.

  2. Is it already awards season? It’s not even December!

For nominations I think we will see Beowulf, Persepolis, Ratatouille, Simpsons and Surf’s Up with Ratatouille taking home the statue.

Here are the winner’s from the past few years if you are curious:

    Happy Feet
Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit
    The Incredibles
    Finding Nemo
    Spirited Away
    Shrek

  3. See, that’s the thing though – because less than 16 films were shortlisted, only three move on to get nominations.

So of your five…which two do you think will miss the cut?

  4. Rataouille is one of my favourite movies of the year and I think it will win. I didn’t see Persepolis, but would bet on a nom but I’m not sure about that 3rd spot. As much as I would liek The Simpsons in there, let’s face it, there’s nothing that special about it.

  5. Oh, goodness – only three noms that changes it a bit!

In that case I would gander it’d be Persepolis, Ratatouille and The Simpsons Movie and still say Ratatouille would win

I bet Beowulf will do well on the tech awards.

I guess if they qualify for animation that they can’t be nominated for visual effects? The lands of live action and animation are beginning to merge at some points recently, most particulary with Beowulf.
