TIFF Reaction: SEXYKILLER

While I did have a ticket to see RADIO LOVE on Saturday night, which would have been my last screening of the festival, when I got home after SEXYKILLER, I decided to call it a day. After all, when you’ve just indulged in dessert, the meal is over right?

Selected as part of TIFF’s Midnight Madness programme, SEXYKILLER is the cool and funny Spanish tale of Barbara (Macarena Gomez), a university student that makes Lara Croft look like a Girl Guide. Barbara takes pleasure in killing those who cross her – and crossing her can be anything from buying a dress she wanted to running over her dog. Quick and ruthless, she seems like she’d be right at home in the DiVA Squad from KILL BILL. As her body count piles up, she suddenly gets the whole university jittery about the “Campus Killer”. However, none of them suspect this particular Barbie Doll, thus she continues to slay uninterrupted.

The movie keeps things fun, and doesn’t go for too high a gross out factor. There are one or two gruesome kills – an especially memorable one involving a three inch stiletto – but by and large the movie is on a par with other horror-based romps like SHAUN OF THE DEAD. It has a lot of style, and plenty of good laughs thanks in most part to Gomez’s sultry, nonchalant narration.

The movie gave lots of laughs, lots of chills, and made for for 100 minutes of cinematic joy. What else could one want in a flick?
