Stacked Actors

Yes, more nominating goodness this morning, this time courtesy of the Screen Actors Guild. And is it just me, or does their award statuette look like an indecisive thespian?

Over the past few years the SAG Awards have been going higher and higher profile – I know, it seems like all these awards have been trying to go higher profile, but stay with me. In so doing, they have actually started to steal some of The Golden Globes’ thunder. If you have any interest in who might be nominated for what Oscar (guilty!), then the guild awards- SAG, along with the writers’ and directors’ guilds -have actually started to prove themselves as a pretty good barometer. With SAG though, the only thing they have resembling a “Best Picture” category is “Best Performance by a Cast”. While sometimes that manages to be a best picture barometer (CRASH for instance)…more often it gives some love to a great ensemble movie (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and THE BIRDCAGE were also previous winners).

This year’s nominee list after the jump.

  1. I would be really happy with that shortlist for best actor.

Can we please just nominate Page, Cotillard and Christie then leave the other two best actress slots blank? There’s no need to nominate Blanchett, Foster or Jolie (again!?!) just for lack of options. Hell, I’d even take Amy Adams over them.

Nice to see some love finally for Tommy Lee Jones. I think this signifies him as the surprise nod in supporting.

What happened to Saoirse Ronan in supporting?

Did they just pick best ensemble out of a hat?
