Smile Like You Mean It

Confession: I’ve never found Seinfeld funny. Never. Not once. I’ve tried though. I’ve watched classic episode after classic episode, exposed myself to contests, puffy shirts, shrinkage, Frogger, and Mulva. I’ve never laughed out loud…ever, and it’s usually pretty easy to make me laugh. Now combine that “I-don’t-get-it” shoulder shrug with the fact that reruns of the show are on TV almost endlessly, and what you have is Hatter’s general disdain for all things Jerry. Though I did think he was pretty good on 30 Rock a few weeks back.

With all of that in mind, I think I might have a hard time enjoying BEE MOVIE. The reason being that along with Seinfeld’s humour not being my particular brand of vodka, I also find that hype rubs me the wrong way. I swear I’ve been watching teasers and trailers for this movie since Frodo and the gang were trying to get rid of their enchanted jewellery. Sometimes it feels as if I’ve been seeing teasers for a movie forever, and six months before it hits screens I’m already in a “Just show me the movie already!” mindset. BEE MOVIE is falling squarely into that level of hype. Then again, what do you expect when Jerry Seinfeld glides down a zip line in a giant bee costume at The Cannes Film Festival.

If I get out to see this sucker in theatres, I promise you I’ll keep an open mind and hope to be joyfully entertained…but it won’t be easy.
