While I do have a small smattering on non-TIFF related content in the hopper, it’s probably safe to say that The Matinee is now officially in full-on TIFF run-up mode. If the goings-on at the festival interest you – consider this a one stop shop. If they don’t…see you on September 17th, I guess.

My trailer selection today is for a film I happily hold a ticket to for the upcoming festival, and at the moment that’s about all I can say about it! As I’ve mentioned before, this time of year I go into full-on lockdown mode, trying to learn as little about the films I’ll be seeing as I can. So when I skimmed through the TIFF guide and considered my options, I came to this page and said “Oh, David O. Russell has a new movie coming out – I’m in.”

Russell, if you are unaware, is the brains behind I (heart) HUCKABEES, THREE KINGS, FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, and THE FIGHTER. I count myself a massive fan of these first two, so anything the man does gets an automatic look-see from me.

Beyond Russell’s involvement and the casting of Lawrence and Cooper though, I know nothing. Seriously – I didn’t even know that DeNiro, Tucker, Weaver, and Stiles were in the film until I looked at the IMDb page for this post. And yes – for the third week in a row that means I haven’t even watched the trailer I’m posting.

  1. I have only seen The Fighter completely. I quite liked it. I Heart Huckabees, whatever I’ve seen of it, was v. weird.

I want to watch this for Lawrence more than anything. She has played similar kind of roles so far and this will be a departure from that.

    1. THE FIGHTER is sort of his black sheep. For that film he was less of an auteur and more of a hired gun by the studio. He was working on a film that was unceremoniously shelved (NAILED was its title if I’m remembering correctly), and rather than go completely back to the drawing board, he took on FIGHTER.

Of course, the unexpected side-effect is that FIGHTER ended up getting him a Best Director nomination.

HUCKABEES is absurd, but that’s what makes it so good. If that feels too “off” for you, go back further and check out THREE KINGS…it has aged remarkably well.

  2. So no Blind Spot this month? Weren’t you the one bugging me a week ago saying that it was coming up? Hmmm?

Three Kings and Flirting are pretty fantastic – the latter manages to sustain its relative insanity for its entire length. The Fighter impressed me as I figured it would be straight up and routine – the story was indeed pretty basic, but it just felt more alive than your run of the mill version. Not a big fan of Melissa Leo’s performance (I didn’t think the movie needed it to be that BIG), but otherwise it is really solid.

Huckabee needs a rewatch…I just wasn’t anywhere near that movie’s wavelength when I saw it. I didn’t hate it, but it is absolutely one of those films that I just didn’t “get”. But there’s enough there to make me want to revisit.

Playbook is definitely on the list…Have you seen his first feature Spanking The Monkey? I quite like that one as well, but it’s got its awkward moments.

    1. I put it up on Twitter that the blind spots would be late – thanks for reading (jerk).

I’ve actually never seen FLIRTING, but with SILVER on my slate for the festival, perhaps I’ll get my mitts on a copy of that and MONKEY to bone up. Interesting to hear that you aren’t crazy about HUCKABEES – I figured that was right up your alley.

  3. Ah Twitter…Yes, true, I really shouldn’t make a move without consulting it first…B-)

Yeah, it’s weird with Huckabees because you’re right – it does sound right up my alley. I was super excited for it. I’ll revisit for sure now though…

I have to think you’ll like Flirting, but Monkey certainly won’t appeal to as wide an audience. I do think you should see it – if only to understand why I laughed out loud when you said “bone up” (and if you said that on purpose, bravo…).

    1. Rewatched HUCKABEES Monday night, and if there was ever a film that has “Bob” written all over it, it’s that film. (“How am I not myself?”)

I’ve grabbed a copy of FLIRTING from our friends at Upstairs Video, but they didn’t have Monkey…so it looks like that’ll have to wait until after TIFF.

  4. If it has Lawrence, I’m sold. She’s slowly becoming one of my favorite actors/actresses/whatevers. And I haven’t even seen Hunger Games.
