Reaction: MISTER LONELY

This one is going to be short and sweet – I really didn’t like MISTER LONELY ( * ). The movie is primarily about a group of people who are all impersonators. They all live together at a massive estate, where they hope to put on a performance for whatever audience they might get. Think of it as an Island of Misfit Toys with Warner Herzog as The Pope.
Unfortunately, the scenario has about five absurd moments too many, and to top it all off, they pull the emotional rug out from under you in the final act. Mixed in with all of it, is an equally absurd subplot about nuns that skydive without parachutes (yes – you read that correct).
There was a small crowd for the Scotiabank, and several walk-outs, so I don’t think I’m alone in my distaste. If you are a fan of director Harmony Korine’s other work, you might dig MISTER LONELY. If you aren’t a fan, give this one a miss.
