Tired Eyes

Thoughts on a Friday AfternoonSeveral signs are telling me that this year’s Toronto Film festival is almost done…the fact that this morning no cast or crew turned up for the second screening of RESERVATION ROAD – hell the red carpet was even rolled up…the fact that the applause is thinning out for the “thanks volunteers”...

Reaction: RESERVATION ROAD

RESERVATION ROAD (* * 1/2) was a late addition…mostly because it looked alright and fit into a gap I had in my schedule. The movie actually has quite the cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly, Mark Ruffalo, and Mira Sorvino. The story is set very early on, so I’m not worried about giving much away....

Reaction: DEATH DEFYING ACTS

So here we are on day eight, and it finally happened. I went to a screening of a movie I didn’t like. Someone in the know warned me about this coming in, but I wanted to like it. Truthfully, I can’t say that I didn’t like it, more like I didn’t care about it once...

Reaction: DR.PLONK

Sometimes, the best ideas come from the oddest places. When i asked director Rolf de Heer how he was inspired to make his silent comedy, DR. PLONK (* * *), he answered that he was simply rooting through a closet in his production house, and came upon some very expired film stock…stuff that should have...

Lucky

Finally, after a long string of successful mornings – my luck finally ran out. I went to The Manulife Centre box office this morning, looking to grab a same-day ticket for my younger brother to see LARS AND THE REAL GIRL. “Sorry” the friendly volunteer told me “sold out”. I looked at my watch that...

Reaction: I’M NOT THERE

After 12 screenings, and seven days, I still haven’t gone to a film I haven’t liked. But, I can say that so far, I’M NOT THERE (* * 1/2) was the film I’ve liked the least. The movie is a Bob Dylan biopic with a twist. In my reaction post to CONTROL, I mentioned that...

Reaction: REDACTED

I don’t rattle easy when I watch a movie – REDACTED (* * * *) got me pretty good. It’s a fictional account of an alleged incident that happened in Iraq during the current gulf war. An incident which has since been redacted. The story goes that an American Marine unit stormed into a civilian...

Let it Rain

Thoughts on a Wednesday MorningIt is Wednesday morning…isn’t it? My sense of time is slowly slipping away, but I’ll be alright. That rainstorm last night got to me in a few ways. My clothes from last night still haven’t exactly dried out, and I myself and trying to fight off a bit of a cold....

Reaction: BODY OF WAR

Tonight I attended a screening that will join the ranks of my all-time greatest film festival memories. At 9pm tonight, I took my seat in the Isabel Bader for the premiere of BODY OF WAR (* * * *) a great new anti-war doc about Tomas Young, a young soldier back from combat in Iraq....
