Reaction: BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU’RE DEAD

No red carpet in sight…lots of tickets available…programmers getting into the Anti-Piracy-“Yarrrrgh“. It must be day ten. With day ten, come the leftovers. The good-looking, under-delivering films that end off this front-end-loaded festival. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen a handful of good movies on the last day (IN AMERICA, THE COOLER, WHEN THE LEVEES...

Reaction: AMAZING JOURNEY – THE STORY OF THE WHO

After a while, you need to reset. After a string of exposing yourself to all sorts of new information, you find yourself needing to go back to something familiar to cleanse the palette, to take some comfort and digest everything you’ve just consumed. In this respect, AMAZING JOURNEY – THE STORY OF THE WHO (...

Reaction: MISTER LONELY

This one is going to be short and sweet – I really didn’t like MISTER LONELY ( * ). The movie is primarily about a group of people who are all impersonators. They all live together at a massive estate, where they hope to put on a performance for whatever audience they might get. Think...

Tired Eyes

Thoughts on a Friday AfternoonSeveral signs are telling me that this year’s Toronto Film festival is almost done…the fact that this morning no cast or crew turned up for the second screening of RESERVATION ROAD – hell the red carpet was even rolled up…the fact that the applause is thinning out for the “thanks volunteers”...

Reaction: RESERVATION ROAD

RESERVATION ROAD (* * 1/2) was a late addition…mostly because it looked alright and fit into a gap I had in my schedule. The movie actually has quite the cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly, Mark Ruffalo, and Mira Sorvino. The story is set very early on, so I’m not worried about giving much away....

Reaction: DEATH DEFYING ACTS

So here we are on day eight, and it finally happened. I went to a screening of a movie I didn’t like. Someone in the know warned me about this coming in, but I wanted to like it. Truthfully, I can’t say that I didn’t like it, more like I didn’t care about it once...

Reaction: DR.PLONK

Sometimes, the best ideas come from the oddest places. When i asked director Rolf de Heer how he was inspired to make his silent comedy, DR. PLONK (* * *), he answered that he was simply rooting through a closet in his production house, and came upon some very expired film stock…stuff that should have...

Lucky

Finally, after a long string of successful mornings – my luck finally ran out. I went to The Manulife Centre box office this morning, looking to grab a same-day ticket for my younger brother to see LARS AND THE REAL GIRL. “Sorry” the friendly volunteer told me “sold out”. I looked at my watch that...

Reaction: I’M NOT THERE

After 12 screenings, and seven days, I still haven’t gone to a film I haven’t liked. But, I can say that so far, I’M NOT THERE (* * 1/2) was the film I’ve liked the least. The movie is a Bob Dylan biopic with a twist. In my reaction post to CONTROL, I mentioned that...
