If it’s the day after a long weekend, it’s the day I mail in a post.

With Spike Lee’s OLDBOY remake mere weeks away, it occurred to me that I never asked any of you fine folks whether you believe it stands half a chance…or whether it’s going to be yet another pointless Hollywood remake.

What do we think gang: The next DEPARTED? The next GRUDGE? Perhaps something in between?

  1. I think it should do alright. They’ve got a great cast, and I’m not sure if the average movie goer has already seen the original Oldboy? I know most film fans have, but a lot of my friends who are not have never heard about it.

    1. That’s sort of my position on American adaptations of foreign films. My ultimate hope is that they do no harm…but even if they only get the broad strokes right, I’d prefer that to people never hearing the story at all.

I take it for granted sometimes, but the unfortunate fact is that there are a lot of people who don’t want to “read a movie”.

Let’s hope for the best, yes?

  2. In my opinion, The Departed and The Grudge are on the same end of the spectrum when it comes to remakes.

Anyways, I’m going to probably skip this, if only because I want to see the Korean original before seeing the North Americanized remake.

  3. I’m intensely curious how certain aspects of the film will be received in the U.S.

I know when I first saw the original, it took me out of the picture and turned me off it for a while.

  4. This could either be absolutely terrible, or something of an artistic statement that only Spike Lee could give us. Either way, it’s going to be an interesting watch.
