When this clip dropped last week, it was interesting to listen to the reaction online. Some people were stoked, others were very sceptical.

It really is easy to see cases for both as the film could come with grand visual splendour, or could also deliver biblical bombast that we haven’t seen around these parts since Charlton Heston parted The Red Sea.

To me though, I look a little bit less at the name of the film and a little bit more at the name above the film. Darren Aronofsky hasn’t steered me wrong yet. He has brought me two of my favorite films of the last ten years and seems to have a firm grasp of storytelling no matter what story he tries to tell. So while I might be wary if this film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson or Wolfgang Petersen, the director who is bringing it to us is a man I’m willing to gamble on.

In Aronofsky I Trust…

  1. I want to trust in Aronofsky, but I seriously do not care about ANYTHING else in this film. Don’t care about the story much, don’t like how the trailer looks, and I really really really don’t like Russel Crowe’s face. It’s just one of those things I find very difficult to look past.
I might watch it for Aronofsky, Watson and Lerman, but that’s it. I hope it isn’t awful.

    1. Something I’ve come to understand: Effects in trailers – especially early trailers – almost never “look right”.

Check out The Hulk in the first Avengers trailer.

I usually figure that there’s a lot more rendering to be done…which of course begs the question, “why show anything?”

  2. If that’s true – effects in trailers don’t look right – I’m very happy, because as much as I wanted to be impressed by this (Aronofsky, Crowe, Watson, Lerman, Hopkins – yes!) and I’m more on board with Nikhat – I don’t care for the story or the trailer and it looks… well, lame. I won’t give up hope, though, no way I will.

BTW, which are these two of your favourite films? I have my suspicions, but still… 😀

    1. I was a little off in my math, but I consider THE WRESTLER and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM two of the best movies of the century so far. In the case of the latter, it gets bonus points as a film that shook me up to the point that I never need to see it again.
