Sometimes, I think much of what a film wants to say can be embodied in a single image. Other times, I think random individual shots stick in our brain for reasons all our own.

Both of these ideas got me starting a little tradition here on The Matinee: a tradition of a post dedicated to my favorite shots of the year. The idea started back in 2010, and continued at the end of 2011.

While there were a few more that I just couldn’t source, below are some of the ones that stuck with me in 2012.

  1. Beautiful post. Some of these are definitely going to make mine too. I wouldn’t know what to put for Skyfall and Moonrise Kingdom though. Such gorgeous looking films.

    1. Admittedly those two films were tough to choose from.
For SKYFALL for instance, I was actually more enamoured with the shot of Bond toasting with his Martini in the club. Couldn’t find it though.

Any shots from other films that you would have included?

    1. Now that you mention it, I did like some of the imagery when the limo happens upon the protest. I seem to remember a shot of some people operating a giant rat puppet for instance…

    1. I probably could have done a whole post dedicated to shots from THE MASTER alone. That moment when the boat pulls out into San Francisco harbour is another one that sticks with me.

I never caught up with LONELIEST PLANET – guess I have some homework for 2013!

  2. Ah, the bridge scene from TDKR! I love that choice. Plus, the one from Take This Waltz is gorgeous, but I really like the one of Michelle Williams on the rickshaw with her hair blowing in the wind. So purdy.

And OMG, all of Skyfall would be on my list.

  3. Love that you do this post. Such a big part of why we all love movies so much, right? The eternal hope that we will see the perfect (to us) shot. I have a post going up this week about my own favorite shot, which I couldn’t source. I so rarely can source my favorite shots. Kudos to you for doing so.

    “That’s not a safe altitude.”

    1. It’s from “Starlet”, which I don’t know if you had a chance (or if you want to) catch up with. It’s my own fault for always most adoring images in these teeny-tiny indies.

  4. Beautiful shots and excellent choices for the respective films. That one from Rust & Bone is probably my favourite as well. ‘Shame’ is a 2012 release here so I could easily pick any shot from that film!

Here are a few from 2012 films from me

Fighting in the dark with the electronic billboard in the background (Skyfall)

Lovers in the pool (Cafe de Flore)

The whiteboard (The Cabin in the Woods)

I also wanted to find the shot of Marina Abramović when her ex partner sits down in front of her in ‘Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present’.

    1. Curiously, I didn’t select any shot from SHAME for my list last year. I wonder why. I might have gone with that single tear during “New York, New York”…or that ambiguous final look when he’s back on the subway.
