  1. Love the episode. Good job to both of you. I was disappointed there wasn't more discussion of loveable sea cows but Martin Scorsese more than makes up for it =p

    Great job as always eh!

  2. A couple of "eh's" and I think I heard a few 'aboots' but I had so much fun and listened to it as soon as I got home from work last night.

Thanks again, can't wait for the next one!

  3. @ Travis… There will be talk of Manitee soon enough. Patience, young grasshopper.

    Thanks eh!

@ Big Mike… Glad you dug! As I was cutting it I had a smile on my face because it was beginning to feel like "The Big Mikecast, with special guest Mad Hatter".

Thing is though, I prefer the guest to talk a bit more than me anyway (My mantra when editing is "When in doubt, cut hatter out"). So kudos!

As for "aboot", we were talking about it during the last podcast, and from what I'm told my particular accent tends to come across more as "aboat".

Listen for that, I'm sure it's in there somewhere eh.

@ Mike L… Glad you dug. Given that you're local, perhaps you'll wanna record one with me down the road.

  4. Great episode. Point on in the discussion about Shutter Island, and I dug the non "final countdown" at the end. As an obsessive list maker I approve, and was happy with each of your #1's.

  5. And thus the Uni epic commenting begins:

Mike compares you to Carson Daly? I personally might consider that an insult 😛

I usually go to movies long after their release so it's usually just me and 4 old ladies in the theater so that's how I avoid texters and heavy drinkers :). Next time someone does that Mad just stand up right in the middle and yell: PUT THAT BACK IN YOUR PANTS!

    – might ruin the movie, but it would be legendary 🙂

I so can't wait to see Shutter Island though, sounds like a movie I would love. Will prob get to see it in the next couple of weeks.

I need to see more Scorsese films. Especially some of his 80s and pre-80s stuff. I've seen a lot, but not nearly enough :).

  6. Great as ever Hatter!

How can you pick a Martin Scorsese top five? I have enjoyed every one of his movies, the only one I haven’t seen is Boxcar Bertha, I have never been able to find a copy and its never on TV. So lets give this top five a go:

1 – Goodfellas (beep down I know Raging Bull is a better film but I just love this movie)
    2 – Raging Bull
    3 – Taxi Driver
    4 – Casino
    5 – The Last Waltz

Only another three weeks until we get Shutter Island. I think in have mentioned before, this is a great time of year for movie releases over here.

By the way “The Best of You” good title, great song.

  7. @ Heather… Admittedly, part of me wants to use that clip of Big Mike singing as the theme song for every Top Five section of my future podcasts.

@ Univarn… I would be insulted if his Carson/Carson joke wasn't so damned funny.

Do indeed go on a Scorsese bender (perhaps after your upcoming Kurosawa bender). His body of work just boggles the mind…as evidenced by Mike & I's fanboy rantings for an hour plus.

Admittedly, there are times when I miss having Mondays off, since I usually spent the afternoon at the movies with just five other people seeing the latest releases.

@ Number Six… A swell five, and I won't nip for choosing GOODFELLAS over BULL. To me they are almost 1 and 1A.

Glad you approve of the Foo Fighter reference…I thought it might be a bit too obvious.

  8. @ Heather… Admittedly, part of me wants to use that clip of Big Mike singing as the theme song for every Top Five section of my future podcasts.

    NICE!

  9. Probably is a bit obvious but I think you can be forgiven as the Foo Fighters are such a great band, saw them live in 2007 and they really rocked, would love to see them again.

  10. Another great job Hatter.

I was a little disappointed myself that I couldn't put up my own list of Best Scorsese films as there were still a few I haven't seen, such as The Last Temptation of Christ which you both seemed to really like.

Glad to hear both of you liked Shutter Island as well. I would not be surprised at all to see your star rating grow as you see it one or two more times. Each time I think about it, the more I love it.

  11. @ Big Mike… Guess I gotta put my money where my mouth is now, don't I?

@ Number Six… I caught them last spring, and still can't believe how awesome the show was. It took me a long time to finally catch their show – it was worth the weight!

    @ Mike… Good to know!

@ Danny… Don't let what you haven't seen stop you. Hit me with a Scorsese five!

  12. I'd be happy to. As of right now:

    1. Raging Bull
    2. Goodfellas
    3. The Aviator
    4. The Departed
    5. Casino

I feel like I need to see Taxi Driver again. Although I loved De Niro and the soundtrack, I wasn't blown away overall. I have a feeling a second viewing might do it justice, though.

  13. When reading your review I found myself nodding my head yes all the way through. Couldn't have found a better lede: "Do you really want to know?" It says it all, really. If you'd like to check out my take on some of the stuff that happened in the movie, and maybe it'll trigger memories parts you saw in it too, check out that link i posted on my review. I went to town on the comment section of John Likes Movies blog.

I'll also look to check out your podcast.

  14. Good show, gents – between the two of you, you've got Scorcese covered up and down. Enjoyed the Ebert talk (I concur – great piece) and interview, as usual. Hatter, you pointed out the baked goods, but also lost was the chance to lend Mike some DVDs. Then again, there wasn't much outside of GWTW that Mike hasn't seen (that you guys discussed).

I still say The Final Countdown is waaaaay better than The Best of You (I think it was my suggestion, too 😉 ). But really – the Foos over GOB? No way.

Speaking of the Top 5 lists, a minor quibble – what's the deal with you stealing glances at everyone's lists pre-show and then adjusting your list so as not to have any repeats? Might make for more discussion topics, but it makes your list feel disingenuous, and I demand integrity from pointless lists.

Breaking news of a Big Mikecast…interesting.

  15. @ danny… Still a solid list, and I do believe that TAXI DRIVER is one that gets better the more you see it. So if you haven't watched it for a while, give it another look.

I personally would make it parct of a Scorsese/DeNiro triple-play with LAST KING OF COMEDY and MEAN STREETS.

(After which of course, you MUSt blog about all three!)

@ Casey… Glad you dug that one, since I actually had a lot of trouble writing it! Lookin' forward to reading your take and getting your feedback on this 'cast.

@ Fletch… What can I say – the guy has seen everything that counts, and I don't even own GWTW. Ain't nothin' I can lend him. I'm betting the "Hatter Lends" bit will return in Episode 8.

I'm sticking with The Foos – but as I mentioned, I think I'm gonna start including Mike's little bit of humming as the theme song.

Integrity from Pointlessness you say. Perhaps. It DOES come into play as I know there was crossover in Shannon's list for Episode Six, and Univarn's list for Episode Three.

To be honest, there usually isn't THAT much crossover, but I find it a bit more interesting when eight nine or ten movies get discussed rather than just five being agreed with between two people. Plus usually I pick such broad topics (Music movies, best photography) that there's very little carry over anyhow.

Speaking of Top Fives, any ide of one we can do for our discussion coming up in Episode nine?

The world is waiting with baited breath for the premiere of The Mike-cast. Can't wait to be a guest.

  16. Loved the podcast. One movie I'd add to Bringing Out the Dead and Cape Fear when talking about Shutter Island would be The Shining. Visually, all of the magical things that come to life are confused with reality, mixing that ambiguous line between sanity and insanity, dreams and reality. Until the end of the movie when it is revealed that the things that Shine to Danny — the two little girls in the hallway, etc. — are really real. Wendy runs through the hotel and sees all sorts of messed up stuff — the elevator filled with blood, the skeletons, guy in a beaver costume, etc. The entire movie was a BUILDUP to that climactic point — the buildup happening when Jack talks to the bartender Lloyd and other such instances. I think Scorcese acheived this suspense building to a climax at the end as well, where the truth is revealed, although it isn't as much of a "shocking scary" climax as you and Big Mike pointed out. It's definitely more of a "disturbing scary."

Great job on the cast. Looking forward to keeping up with your work.

  17. Ha, that sounds like quite a lineup.

The Last King of Comedy is one I really want to see, but like Taxi Driver, I wasn't blown away by Mean Streets, although it was for different reasons. Perhaps I'll have to give both films another viewing, and I don't doubt that my appreciation will increase.
