A funny thing happened on the way to Matineecast 81: The film chosen for the feature review turned out to be something of a non-entity. Fortunately though, my guest this week is a smart cookie, and can still offer up a fun discussion, even if it seems at a glance like there might not be that much there to discuss. In a way, there is almost an audible camaraderie on display, likely originating from being on-mic together five times in the last year alone.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the abundance of Backstreet Boys in this episode was inspired when I learned in the run-up to the episode that Mr. Roan is an unabashed fan.

Sadly, I forgot to ask him to explain within the runtime of the show, but perhaps he’ll grace us with some clarity in the comment section.

Here’s what’s in store in episode eighty-one…

  1. NOOOOO JOHN HUGHES! I haven’t watched Weird Science though. But come on, Molly Ringwald and Sixteen Candles 🙁

Um perfect heist movie cast. I have been talking about Ryan Gosling and Jessica Chastain should star in a film together, and seeing how they are pretty serious, GORGEOUS actors, I think they can come in an Out of Sight-y film. Johnny Depp can be a villain.

I love The Illusionist. The Prestige- meh.

  2. I get a screenload of gibberish when I hit the download button (in firefox, which successfully downloaded podcasts for years).

Might be an idea to get a tech savvy friend help you with the downloads Ryan mate.

    1. I talked to a tech-savvy friend when you pointed it out to me last time. Amusingly, the fix we figured out was to turn off the plugin, and then turn it back on again. (Go figure) The problem only seems to be contained to Firefox for some reason, so you might want to start right-clicking the download button as that seems to be a work-around.

  3. The ironic thing about David Blaine is that, despite the stunts (which he still performs), he got his start doing real magic busker-style (hence the name “street magic”)

  4. Nice episode, I’d have to say for my heist movie I’d go with Robert Downey Jr. As the fast talking con man, Morgan Freeman as the stoic behind the scenes brains of the operation and Emma Stone as the seductress/skilled operator.

  5. I have to say, I greatly enjoyed this episode even though my all-time favorite movie (“Last of the Mohicans”) got slammed briefly and then you took “Leaving Las Vegas” to task. I haven’t seen “Leaving Las Vegas” in quite some time since it takes a lot of built-up fortitude to watch it but I always kind of liked that the story contained such familiar tropes and yet still wrangled something so real out of them. That made it feel so old-fashioned to me, which maybe is what I was looking for in the 90’s. But, like I said, long time since I’ve seen it, perhaps I’ll have to start steeling myself to re-watch it.

Heist cast: Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, John Turturro. Let those three go to work and see what happens.
