Welcome to The Matineecast’s 007 episode. In a way, it’s a little bit later than I wish it was, given that most of the SKYFALL excitement and discussion seems to have peaked with the North American premiere last weekend. However, it feels like one extra week of breathing room allows this episode a retrospective vibe.

Considering how I don’t know when or if there will be another 007-centric episode of this show, the fact that it is retrospective of both SKYFALL and the franchise on the whole suits me just fine.

One thing that might come through in the audio is a sense of familiarity. You see my guest today has been a dear family friend for nine years now, so hopefully you will forgive the odd drift towards our friendship and our individual spouses.

Oh, and at one point in the show you will actually hear me get distracted by an iconic moment in 007 history…be sure to listen for it.

  1. I have been talking about Bond going back to 60s for quite a while now and it should be Fassy as Bond (something I thought of back when Inglourious Basterds came out). And I think 60s for Fassy cuz “they don’t make men like that anymore” 😛

What I want for Christmas- actually watching Django Unchained on Christmas as it is my most anticipated film of the year. However I already know that this will not happen 🙁 (India and its censorship board are my mortal enemies). Also, Merida’s hair.

I want to be Bond. And I would take the Shanghai sequence. Were I to fight someone on a high-rise building and subsequently die, that’s how I want it to look like.

I really like Goldeneye. The moment when Brosnan gets out of the tank and fixes his tie is brilliant (I also cheered when Craig fixed his sleeve after jumping onto a train). Onatopp is my second favourite Bond girl. Die Another Day was ridiculous. The car, good lord! I was like 10 when it came out and I still couldn’t digest how stupid it was. Also I can’t stand Halle Berry.

  2. This episode requires some response.

    1. Without having gone back to watch the film since I was nine years old, I can assure you that SPACECAMP is *teh greatest evah.* That’s internet lingo for “this movie rocks.”

    2. “Are you stoned?” is the best of all possible responses to someone admitting they don’t like JAWS.

    3. So am I going to get some weird *fourth* version of Know Your Enemy the next time I’m on the podcast?!

    4. There’s no reason to set a new Bond movie in the past. We have a buncha Bond movies set in the past already. Bond as a series, by definition, keeps up with the time we’re in – sometimes successfully, sometimes not, but always integrally to the storytelling.

    5. I’m still consuming Bond. No crash in sight. After I finished From A to Bond I saw THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS and FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE again at the Lightbox; I’ve got tickets for OCTOPUSSY in December, and I’ve seen SKYFALL three times. But more importantly: check out EVERYTHING OR NOTHING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF 007. That’s a damn good doc, and it nearly slipped under my radar.

    6. For Christmas, I’d like THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY to be as good as THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.

    7. My dad’s two-word review of SKYFALL: “Too long.” He then went on to basically say exactly what Ryan says in the episode – there are ample opportunities to tighten up some cuts and probably take fifteen minutes out of the film in total, without entirely losing a single line or beat.

    8. Two Brosnan films? You poor buggers.

  3. One aspect of Die Another Day that’s probably now forgotten and buried under all the invisible cars and ice palaces is the fact that this was the first Jame Bond film where he is actually seen having sex on screen. In fact, they had to cut a few seconds from the North American version to ensure a PG-13 rating.

Anyways, here’s my Christmas present feedback:
I usually always slow down my blu-ray purchases around this time of the year, so I can save films for my Christmas list. I’m not sure if there will be too much on my list this year, since I still have unopened blu-rays I received LAST Christmas (AND my birthday). However, items that will definitely be on my list will be The Avengers and the James Bond box set.

  4. My takeaway from Skyfall, the Skyfall shootout at the end of the movie. It isn’t the best part of the film, but it is as close as we are ever likely to get to something I have wanted to see for nearly 20 years . A film based on the novel The Spy Who Loved Me (the 1977 film only used the title).

What I want for Christmas? I would like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to not suck!

    1. Funny thing: There used to be a screening series at Toronto Underground called “Defending the Indefensible”. A friend of mine decided to defend EQUILIBREUM, and before I saw i I was wondering how “indefensible” it was (given how many fans of the series I know there are)

After I watched it, I realized how very wrong I was.

Everything about that movie is flimsy.

  5. So how does one discuss Die Another Day and not bring up the insane ice hotel that magically has electric conduits and controlled doors. Its insane. I would love to put up my defense for A View To A Kill, loved that one revisiting the franchise.

As to answering your question of the week… off the top of my head the number 1 blu ray that I’d love to see make its way under the tree for me is Dick Tracy…. and the Rashomon and Shallow Grave and Royal Tenebaums Criterions…. god dammit. Too many good movies need to be in my collection.
