Episode 6

The last few weeks have been exciting for this particular podcaster. Along with the swell reactions I’ve got from episode five and five-point-one, I also got to take a spin in the guest chair while taking part in my very first LAMBcast.

However, it hasn’t been all bread and roses for my podcasting habits. The iTunes music store seems to have screwed up my feed, thus new episodes don’t seem to be getting to them for the time being. So if you’re the sort to listen to my work on the go and want to download the mp3, I’d suggest going here and subscribing to the Google or Yahoo feeds.

Edit: Scratch that. iTunes has wisened up and now both this episode and The Oscar Special are available through the iTunes Music Store.

But back to the fun stuff…might I present the Ryan Howard episode

This episode has been archived, but it can be made available on request.

  1. You mentioned all my favourites of the genre. The Blues Brothers and Almost Famous would top my list. I would seriously consider The Commitments, The Last Waltz and Woodstock (the longest version you can get your hands on, preferably the directors cut) and Once. A couple you didn’t mention Sid and Nancy and High Fidelity. I have Streets of Fire on VHS, its cheesy and camp but good 80’s fun!

  2. Wahoo two of my favorite bloggers in one podcast! If you're wondering about the randomness of my comments I keep the box open as I listen in another window and just toss out my ideas.

    Redneck Zombies…. *runs to netflix*

The Killer Inside Me… rape is always a touchy issue in film. Especially historically with the various ways it has been displayed.

I've been a big fan of Colin Farrell for a while now, excluding Daredevil *shivers*, and so I am looking forward to seeing him in Crazy Heart. Overall though I need to curve my anticipation which I can't seem to bring down to a normal level.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Never even heard of it… I suppose I'll have to queue it. Yikes there's a lot of movies you guys mentioned in your list that I haven't seen. Perhaps because I'm not that big on music I don't watch a lot of "music movies." Though, High Fidelity? *sad*

Oh, and from now own I'm definitely finishing each post with a Mad Hatter Karaoke Demand! Perhaps we can bride Lady Hatter into filming you and posting it?

  3. So, already cracking into your Top Five for NEXT show? I can see where your list is heading, so that's a good thing, but I like The Last Waltz too, even got it in Blu. I can't wait to be a guest on your show.

  4. YAY for more love for Streets of Fire. I wish I had a copy of it, it's wishlisted and it is on DVD now. And glad to know I'm not the only one who has things on VHS!

Ah, High Fidelity – I didn't love it, but I appreciated it from the perspective of seeing a relationship film from a guys point of view – something we are seeing more and more these days.

Lol… I don't want to hear the after complaints from Red Neck Zombies! It truly is, barely a movie…

Wow, never heard of Hedwig eh Uni? I haven't seen it but it's been on my to see list for a while, I remember it kicking up a storm when it came out and got lots of noms/awards on the indie/festival circuit. Not knowing all the films can be a good thing – lots to look forward too!

I didn't including concert films in my list, made it easier to keep it to five but if I had Woodstock would definitely be on it as would The Song Remains the Same. Gotta love Zepplin.

That reminds me… must watch The Last Waltz!

  5. Forgot to mention Michael Winterbottom in my first comment, he makes some really interesting movies. If you haven’t seen it check out The Claim, anything with Sarah Polley in it is worth seeing.

Shannon, I have over 200 movies on VHS. I am thinking of getting a new VCR whilst you can still get them in case mine ever stops working! It will be cheaper than getting all my old movies on DVD.

I think we get Crazy Heart in a couple of weeks so I will get to see it before the Oscars.

  6. @ Number Six… I like Winterbottom. CODE 46 really stuck with me, and I thought 9 SONGS had a strange intimacy to it as well (Never hurts that it features Franz Ferdinand!). Too bad you weren't local, you and Shannon could swap tapes!

@ Univarn… I like the comment format. If I listened to yours whilst sitting at my computer, I'd return the favour. I don't know if Lady hatter cares to upload it, but I know there's a video that exists from our stag & doe of me singing The Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man" (My 500 DAYS OF SUMMER moment, though far more sober).

As for Hedwig – get on it. You can thank me later.

@ Mike… Yeah, podcasting for me is like chess…I think a few moves ahead. Episode Seven oughta be fun, can't wait to get to it!

@ Shannon… Yup, give that dvd a watch…though you're still ahead of Cheshire who has only watched one of the three loaned to date! Thanks again btw – I'm really happy with how this episode turned out.

  7. Got it! Thanks Mad Hatter, it was so cool hanging out with both of you this afternoon. BTW, I Wanna Hold Your Hand was AWESOME! I was crazy about it when I saw it for the first time, I laughed my butt off when I watched it. Very impressed it got mentioned, so many people don't know that one and I remember it so fondly. As I do The Commitments, so fantastic and wow, he was 16?!

And Redneck Zombies is one of the worst movies ever made, absolutely!

  8. @ Suzie… Glad you enjoyed it – perhaps you'll enjoy listening to a few of the other episodes!

Perhaps now that you and Moxie have both championed HOLD YOUR HAND, I'll track it down and give it a watch…

…even if it isn't my usual cup of tea.

  9. Very enjoyable episode, enhanced by not one but two shoutouts to yours truly (more on that later) and the fact that both of you more or less echoed my Crazy Heart sentiments, though neither of you commented much on the ludicrous nature/believability of Bad/Maggie's relationship. That was the biggest issue I had with the flick.

Anyway, I half expected to come here only to have been lambasted after your calling me out on the infamous "doof insult." Glad to see that didn't happen. 😉 Anyway, I thought of you when I was watching the Super Bowl, as during the pre-game show, I saw a player (pretty sure it was Dwight Freeney) wearing a pair of those badass $200 (or whatever) headphones you were talking about. For the record, they don't look doofy (or maybe it's just because a ripped 250-lb. dood was wearing them) and I endorse your purchase of them. 😀

  10. haha You guys made me laugh out loud so many times…good fun!

"Four?! That's not even divisble by 100 quickly!"

Nice job, you guys…it was over before I had a chance to realize how much time had actually passed! FUN!

  11. @ Fletch… I sorta mentioned the Blake/Jean relationship…saying how at the very least, she should have known better. One of these days, I'm gonna 'cast with someone who loved a movie I hated.

I saw the linebacker wearing my would-be headphones as well…and yeah, I think he pulls it off a bit better from how monstorously big he is! Anyway, I already took my shot at ya in a public forum…there was no way I was gonna rehash it.

    Thanks for listening!

@ Miss Q… Happy to amuse as always, though I was more proud of "Tape? That's what you use to wrap gifts with, isn't it?"

  12. "One of these days, I'm gonna 'cast with someone who loved a movie I hated."

Hmmm, and if only there was someone you knew where that situation was likely to crop up…Hmmm…B-)

Just finished listening to ep 6 (my first one – got started with them late and figured I'd start with Shannon's ep). Really enjoyed it as it felt like I was just sitting at a table with you two listening in. I kept trying to interrupt, but you wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise!

Stop Making Sense is one of my fave concert docs – just about every scene has a different lighting setup and, of course, the music is great. The recent Ashes Of American Flags doc on Wilco was pretty fantastic too. I'd need to think a bit longer to come up with 5 that weren't just concert films and just stories about music or with strong soundtracks.

Thanks for pointing out Glen Hansard was in The Commitments. As soon as you mentioned he was the guitarist, I went "Damn!".

One note…The Blues Brothers wasn't just straight Chicago Blues…There's some Memphis soul bubbling in there – Steve Cropper and Donald Duck Dunn (guitarist and bassist for the band) were both in Booker T and The MGs (their big hit was "Green Onions" – trust me, you know it) and they were the backing band for many of the Stax hits of the 60s (Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, etc.). And don't forget John Lee Hooker – he became famous when he was up North, but he grew up steeped in the delta blues…

Anyway, I'll be listening to your back catalog. Nice job Hatter (and great hearing your voice too Shannon…).

  13. Wow, seeing that at the NFB would be really strange, but also totally awesome. What amazing timing. I didn't realize it was directed by Walter Hill, who also did The Warriors – has that same gritty urban yet somehow fantastical vibe!

  14. Oh… they are also showing Nowhere Boy 2 weeks ahead of it's regular release with a 'special guest'. Wow.

  15. @ Bob… Don't you worry, your turn will be coming up in due time. I'm thinking a few moves ahead right now, but you're right: getting to carry out one of our respectful disagreements behind the mic would indeed be a lot of fun!

I don't know what happened to me, but I seemed to lose my musical prowess when it came to talking about The Blues Brothers. Hell – left on the cutting room floor was me claiming Steve was the guitarist on "Green Onions" – I meant to say "Soul Man", don't ask me how I made THAT mistake.

Anyway – awesome comments, can't wait to get your feedback on my further episodes.

@ Shannon… That screening of NOWHERE BOY sounds like a blast! I might just have to partake!!
