Ever spend a long time away from someone, only to get back together and fall back into the old routine? That’s what you’re in for this week.

We go a little bit off-book with this episode, which I’d wager people who listen to this show wish I’d do a little more often. Not only could I not settle on a top five to tie into the feature review (top five scenes of male nudity?), but I felt like reminding myself and you fine listeners about times gone by…and dropped a good ol’ montage into the third act.

I don’t want to waste any more words setting it up, except to say that this felt just like old times.

Here’s what’s in store in episode fifty-four…

  1. I’ll let you calling my blog “SK on Film” pass because it’s a less severe error than “Skon Movies” 😛

I think the most “normal” Justin Theroux role I could think of was his recurring guest role on the 4th season of SIX FEET UNDER.

As for stars under 30, I have to say that I’m very impressed by Elle Fanning and I think she’ll end up a better actress than her sister Dakota (who became less interesting after she entered her teens)

    1. My bad – I’ll try to get it right next time. I keep forgetting about Six Feet Under, but with Lauren Ambrose in this movie too it was sort of like a mini reunion!

      Thanks for listening.

  2. Points:

I think it’s unfair to criticize De Palma about his “directing abilities” – his style is distinguished and unique. His films don’t always pan out. But before one calls him off, check out the masterpiece “Blow Out”.

Superbad and Project X comparison :: the former is a monumentally more interesting than “Project X”. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I found it to be degrading, homophobic, devoid of humanity, and a considerably offensive.

Ryan, don’t neglect 21 Jump Street. Trust me. I know the trailer makes the film look so … bland and conventional. But it’s actually a nice retread of the 80s buddy cop movie. You’ll have fun.

Always listening my man. Keep up the good work.

    1. I might not have any other options, but 80’s Buddy Cop movies aren’t what I’m looking for on the big screen at the moment. Thanks for tuning in though – and for the email!

  3. I’ve got to throw my support behind De Palma as well, even if Scarface is in the back half of his films in my book. Scorsese had it pegged when he told De Palma he knew it was a satire of Hollywood. That so many adore it on its garish face value is a comment on them, not the director.

As for stars under 30, well, it almost has to be Chloe Moretz, doesn’t it? She’s given the equivalent of two Natalie-Portman-in-The-Professional performances with Kick Ass and Let Me In, and she managed to pull off the Hermione-esque girl in Hugo without seeming irritating or too precious. She may be the youngest actor I’ve ever made a note to watch in anything.

And re: America the unruly downstairs neighbor, indeed. And I’m the tenant who hates his raucous roommates and comes upstairs to ask if I can crash on the couch.

    1. Did we go off on DePalma as a director, or just his work on this project? I thought it was the latter.

The couch is yours whenever you want – just remember all I have in the fridge is baking soda and Heineken.

      1. It was more Scarface-centric. It’s just that most dismissal of De Palma comes down to that film so every time I defend that movie I end up arguing for his whole career.

And Heineken and baking soda? Are you building a bomb/science fair volcano?

  4. Ryan, as an American I totally dig your description of America. That is spot on. Even if we don’t want to admit it.

I also love that you guys single out Michaela Watkins in “Wanderlust.” I thought she saved the movie, frankly, and in two scenes actually had a semi-convincing arc, something which no one else seemed to have.

Actress Under 30: Olivia Thirlby. That girl’s got mad talent. Even if a few of her recent career choices have made me scheme how I can take over as her agent to keep her on the right path.

    1. I do try not to play up the Canadian/American differences too much on this space, so it’s kinda nice to know I got away with one. Of course this time last year I was stirring up shit by bringing up Americanism in films as a whole debate, so I’m no slouch to talking about the subject.

Thirlby’s an interesting answer – can’t say I saw that one coming. Good call! Thanks for the loyal listenership and commenting.

  5. Though you guys certainly didn’t convince me to see Wanderlust, I might give Hugo another chance sooner rather than later. Maybe I’ll like it more sans 3D.

As for actors under 30, I’ve found myself closely following Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence’s careers lately, which made Like Crazy easy to watch.

  6. Ha! I just listened to this today (way behind on several podcasts).

As much as your calling out of me several times made me laugh out loud, RYAN, I’m still perplexed as to why you did it. My opinion of the film is almost EXACTLY the same as yours – as a matter of fact, RYAN, I’d probably rate it a 2.5 as well (only if I had to – as you know, RYAN, I hate giving star ratings). If I told you to watch it, I’m pretty sure I couched with “it’s mostly funny, but messy and not always on point”. Pretty sure I even tweeted something along those lines. And what’s with blaming me for the lack of graphic nudity, RYAN?

    Granted, I suppose that wouldn’t have hurt…B-)

As for under 30 actors? Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, Mia Wasikowska, Lola Creton (wonderful in “Bluebeard” and “Goodbye, First Love”) and Jesse Eisenberg can still squeak in there for another year…

    1. Geez, welcome to the conversation buddy…

The main reason I was calling you out BOB, was because this film wasn’t even on my radar until you suggested I watch it. Now granted, there wasn’t out there to be discussed, but still, I can’t see me having chosen thos one without your suggestion…BOB

And I blame you because the lack of eye-pleasing female nudity (or hell, even eye-pleasing male nudity)is, as always, your fault.

Thanks for listening though buddy. Keep going, there are good shows that await after this.

      1. Fair enough – I admit to not providing you as much nudity on a daily basis as you seem to be desiring. I’ll try to step that up a bit…

I started on ep 55 yesterday too (had a lot of driving in traffic yesterday) so it was nice hearing Sasha and you chat (though I must berate her for showing no interest in seeing “The Illusionist” – for shame!). Also, I had brownies for breakfast yesterday, so the podcast brought some nice summetry to my day…B-)
