Episode 3

Back by popular demand, it’s another episode of The Matineecast. I’m happy to report that my listenership is actually rising. That’s right boys and girls, this week I actually gained a seventh listener. She said the podcast was amusing and entertaining, but I wonder if she’s just saying that because she’s my mom and she has to.

Anyway, I give you the Babe Ruth episode

Here’s what’s in store in episode three…

Runtime
45 minutes

Up for Discussion

1. My brief introduction
2. Q & A with this episode’s guest, Univarn from A Life in Equinoix
3. Review and reaction of INVICTUS
4. In depth discussion of our Top Five Films of 2009.

Again, thank you all so much for your support and feedback with these podcasts. You really are the best seven listeners a podcaster could ask for.

Enjoy!

  1. I *was* watching Star Trek too – it seems like it was the movie to get and watch this holiday season!

Really enjoyed the cast – interesting to hear you two chat, kinda surreal. Glad to hear more people enjoying Invictus. Rugby ftw 🙂

  2. since I subscribe via iTunes, just wondering if I count amongst the seven listeners. Keep up the good work 😉

  3. @ Univarn… Not bad for two people who have never actually spoken before, huh?

@ Shannon… Left on the cutting room floor was the suggestion that a bunch of bloggers should all watch the same flick at the same time and skype a new commentary track. Glad you dug the cast – can't wait to get you in for one of these.

@ Big Mike… If my notes are to be believed, you are listener number three.

  4. I'm one of those 7 too! Later we can say "Back in the day where there were only 7 of us…."

Doing a commentary track would be freaking awesome! I wonder what film would be good for that… interesting…

  5. Well I have to start by saying I wasn’t watching Star Trek, I went to see two movies at the cinema, Nine and Sherlock Holmes, reviews both now available if you check out my blog. Enough self publicity. If you are numbering your listeners I am claiming No. 6 in tribute to Patrick McGoohan! I can’t believe you haven’t seen Moon yet. Go get the DVD when it comes out, you won’t be disappointed. Some great choices for both your top fives. There are a few that aren’t out yet over here but of the ones I have seen I really enjoyed all your picks. I am going to see Where the Wild Things Are later in the week so will probably blog about it then.

A note on the casting of Morgan Freeman in Invictus. He is only about 20 years younger than Nelson Mandela and as the film was set 15 years ago the ages aren’t far off. Morgan Freeman purchased the rights to the book, produced the film and cast himself so nobody could really argue! Nelson Mandela reportedly approves of the casting!

Finally; unless there is something amazing eligible that I don’t know about I really think The Hurt Locker should get best: Picture, director and actor but it probably won’t!

  6. Hmmm…perhaps I counted wrong…I seem to be getting feedback from more than seven people.

Ah screw it – I like the self-depricating sound of "Seven Listeners"

Thank you all for listening…means a lot to me that you tune in.

@ Shannon… Such a thing would be so easy to co-ordinate, but I wonder who would ever listen to it. Then again, I always wonder who would ever listen to my podcast!

@ Fandango… henceforth, i shall refer to you as "Number Six".

No STAR TREK?? Didn't you get the memo??? Holmes I haven't seen yet, but Nine I have – my review for that oughta be up shortly, and you know darned well I'll be reading yours.

Interesting note about Freeman. It's a strange choice of tale to tell for the first Mandela movie…part of me thinks there might be another one down the line.

Here's hoping for THE HURT LOCKER!

  7. Hey, great job both of you! I'm not wholly in agreement with either of your top 5's but I really enjoyed listening to your discussion of some of the year's top films. And your take on Invictus was very good, as I pretty much had the same thoughts as both of you. I don't see Damon getting an Oscar nom though, I don't know… I think he was a bit bland personally.

Also, I just showed Star Trek to someone too- this is odd.

And I don't know if I'm one of the legendary seven, but I do subscribe through itunes. just fyi.

  8. iTunes subscriber here, too. I think you're gonna have to drop the humble pie routine here pretty soon, Hatter. Maybe go the other direction and refer to us as just "some of your million+ listeners." If you have time for the little people, that is.

Looking forward to listening to this one.

  9. @ Fletch… Good point. Not too sure how much longer I can keep playing the joke. Taking pen to paper I can actually think of a dozen people who have listened to at least one episode…but unlike my blog, I have no way of tracking subscribers/downloads/general interest.

I'll stick with the "seven listeners" joke for another episode or two and reassess then. Cool?

  10. LOL I love that you've now added Mom to the hellos to listenership!

Nice job, boys, especially given that you weren't even in the same room for it! 😉

    – Suzie McQZie

  11. @ Suzie… I'm still amazed that mom is listening!

And by the way – guess whose turn is coming up soon!

  12. Not quite finished with this 'cast, but I just heard you mention that you count Basterds as the best QT film. Some might hear that sentiment and think "But what of Pulp Fiction or x or y or z?"

I heard it and thought, "How is it possible that the movie you think it Tarantino's best is but your 4th-favorite/best movie of 2009?" Shocking.

My verification word is "pepsi." 😀

  13. Currently playing this episode because I feel I need to keep up with the cool kids and give podcasts a go. I picked this one first because I wanted to hear you and Univarn talking (two of my favourite bloggers doncha know!) and I will definitely catch up with the rest over the next couple of days. Good job guys 🙂

  14. @ Fletch… (Reaching back a week or two, but oh well). Did you ever finish listening to this 'cast? If so, whatcha think???

As for BASTERDS, I do indeed boldly decree that it's QT's finest film yet…however that alone isn;t enough to push it to the top of a pretty good class of films (though it does make the top five).

I'm reminded of when I did my decade list. I marked MYSTIC RIVER as tops for 2003. But just because it was the best of that particular year didn't qualify it for my top ten of the decade.

I guess what I'm trying to say is all films aren't equal…and despite my choice of BASTERDS as QT's best, I still contend that he was outplayed by Bigelow at least…if not Daniels and Scherfig too.

    @ filmgeek… Thanks for tuning in! I'm honoured 🙂

Ryan and I have a pretty good reparté going on in this episode despite never having spoken before.

It's funny, some things I see online point to a downward slide for podcasts, so perhaps we're all just late to the party. Keep listening to a fewe different ones, and if you do step behind a mic, count me as one of your first listeniers.

Now get going with episodes 1,2, and 4.
