Episode 13

For this episode of the Lammy-nominated Matineecast, we return to Merry Ol…and irony rears its ugly head.

When you get to the part of this episode where I respond to Hot Docs feedback, please know that I had no clue a Lammy nomination for said coverage was coming. I mean it – I really wasn’t trying to bitch about people’s lack of enthusiasm, but I fear it’ll come across that way. Let me annotate my reaction to the reaction by saying – I thank you all for the honest feedback. Keep it coming!

You’ll also notice a bit of a format switch starting with this episode. I’ve resisted the temptation for six months or so, but I figure if someone as big as Kevin Smith can get away with this, so can I.

(Take bets on how long it takes me to get a cease and desist notice now)

I give you the Carl Crawford episode

  1. Hey Ry,

I don't have your home email addy, or I'd email you about the Lost finale…when you can shoot me an email so we can talk…one. last. time. 😉 I gotta talk to someone or I'm gonna burst.

  2. Jurassic park! Damn Right – but I can't knock 'The Dark Knight' being up there. But you guys and your 'Die Hard's and 'Terminator' experiences. I remember in primary school and all the 'cool' kids had seen 'Terminator', whilst Catholic Mother of Mine wouldn't let us watch 18-rated movies… woah is me. But what would you make of Jurassic Park in 3D?

Lovely to hear the ol' Brits takin' part of the Matineecast!

  3. @ Caralyn… Said it before, I'll say it again – whatever will we talk about now??

@ Aiden… Like I said last week, I'm afraid of talking TV on this blog and tipping people off to the sadly large amount of TV I watch.

Oddly enough I have been feasting on a lot of LOST wrap-up coverage this week, but I maintain my stance that I have precious little to offer.

@ Simon… Jurassic Park in 3-D. Might be alright, though as a rule I am staunchly against any 3-D rendering of previously completed films. It'd be like colourizing a black and white flick.

Glad England could represent once again!

  4. Not finished listening to this one just yet, but wow, that Hatter guy sure was bitter about the Hot Docs stuff, eh? Jeez…

Hey – what'd you to do get your Podomatic player all simplified? Totally messed with the html?

  5. wow, good to hear Fandango's voice at last
great podcast as usual Hatter. you got my vote in the lammys

  6. Awesome show! Very cool top 5- it got me thinking about some of my own big summer movie experiences and so I dug the nostalgic factor.

Will it be back in itunes any time soon? That's how I usually listen in so I'm just curious.

  7. Yes, echoing what Alex said, I was thrilled to hear you bring up 1989's Batman, which was the first summer movie that I can recall going bonkers over.

Other ones I thought of: Men in Black, Top Gun, Indy Jones 3.

Still not sure what I think of the new format with the songs interlaced. A good touch, but some obviously worked better than others. And was I the only one that was waiting for The Shins to be played for "New Slang?"

  8. @ Fletch… I tried not to come off too dickish, but maybe I missed. Obviously the irony was in fifth gear with the Lammy nomination coming for said coverage less than a week later.

I'm not married to the inclusion of the musical interludes, I just wanted something to help move it along a little bit. If I were to stick with this format, the opening song and the "New Slang" song would change every episode…the opening song to suit the guest/show theme, the "New Slang" song to suit the film up for discussion.

    We'll see…

@ Ross… Yeah, that's the coolest part about talking to bloggers I've been following for a year or more; getting to actually hear their voices after so much time of nicknames, witty notes, and ingrained icon images. Glad you dug it!

@ Alex… Looks like the iTunes feed has sorted itself out, but I had to remove the Hot Docs episodes for the time being. Sometime this year I'll cave and actually pay for server access – seems to be the more stable route to go.

  9. Jurassic Park. Well played you scalawag!

Really great podcast as usual. It was refreshing to hear Andy's voice finally! You guys had really good chemistry and he was a fantastic guest.

  10. @ Heather (Better late than never, right?)… Thanks for listening. Strange, I don't think many people listened to this episode – feedback was way, way down.

It was cool to talk to Andy wasn't it? Getting to hear the voices responsible for all this great movie writing I read is actually one of my favorite parts of doing this series!
