  1. thank you for the links! When I did a search in iTunes podcasts for "Matineecast" I couldn't find you.

  2. Great cast! Lots of fun hearing you and the missus go back and forth on film, definitely awesome stuff! Though I did notice when it comes to animated films both you and your wife are very western in your choices. No Miyazaki? *cries*

Perhaps one of these days we'll have to figure out a way for you and me to do one so I can constantly forget everything about movies while someone else talks 🙂

  3. Great podcast! I completely agree about An Education and all the awesome animated films (haven't seen Mr Fox yet). Keep them coming!

  4. @ Danger… Yer welcome. I've submitted it to iTunes, but haven't heard back yet as to whether or not it cuts the muster. We shall see…

@ Univarn… Sad to say that neither the missus nor I are big fans of anime. Sorry to disappoint. Asfor joining me, the boys at LAMBuse Skype to record so maybe we can give it a go sooner rather than later!

@ Tom… Many thanks for the comment! I'd been listening to your input on the LAMBcast over the last few weeks to get it just so.

  5. you're lack of anime love depresses me, along with answermvp, I had to write a post about it (it's long so don't say you weren't warned). As for the podcast I have exams all this week then after that I've got a month available to give it a shot 😛

  6. Nice job with this podcast, really enjoyed it. Be interesting to see if An Education gets any Oscar love. Carey Mulligan is very good in Brothers as well. Need to rewatch Iron Giant, love that one. Keep up the good work, I'll be listening….

  7. GREAT job, Hatters!!! Loved it! I laughed out loud a few times, but I think I most giggled at:

"We're smart enough not to buy the DVD the week it comes out."

"Heh, well…you're a lot smarter than I am!" LMAO

I vote yes on South Park topping the list. I was making my own mental list as I listened, and totally forgot about that one, too! Have to go rework mine yet again! lol

Like I said, fantastic job…can't wait for more! 😀

    – Suzie

  8. Woohoo! Nice job Hatter, was great to hear the cast. I will have to revisit the reviews after I've seen the films but loved the intro, q&a period and news. Fun times and awesome first cast!

  9. Great, I love the Matineecast, good job.

As previously mentioned, I’m really not into animation but you do mention a couple of animated films I really like. A nightmare before Christmas and South Park, I did sit through that film wondering how offended Canadian viewers would be. As for the uncle fucker song, rumour (or urban myth) has it that it had enough nominations for an Oscar nomination but was snubbed on a technicality, we will never know if there is any truth to the rumour.

I don’t know if you can get this from other countries but if you can it is work a listen. It is actually part of a radio show, but the film review section is available as a podcast, always worth listening to.

If the links don’t work try googleing
“Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews”

  10. @ Univarn… Sorry man – can't win 'em all. What say you to the week between Christmas and New Year's? we can do a year-end top five podcast??

@ Linda… Thanks! I really hope AN EDUCATION factors into the Oscar conversation. If not, I think a lot of people will have missed out.

@ Shannon… Thanks – heavy compliment coming from you! Did you tune out once the reviews came up? Or skip past them to the top fives??

@ Fandango… I try! Canadians were quite amused by SOUTH PARK…everyone I knoe gets the giggles thinking back on it. Now I'm off to watch your link.

  11. @Mad works for me (baring any unforseen family stuff coming up). As we get closer lets hammer out an exact day and time 😛

  12. You're welcome Hatter!

I listened up to the reviews, I couldn't figure out how to skip forward on the Gcast icon, it already looked like it was at the end – not sure if that was buffering but couldn't seem to move ahead with the widget.

  13. Ryan and Lady Hatter,

So I listened to the discussion about my thoughts re: cussing instead of swearing. I told Ry before, but it bears mentioning again (since I'm assuming LH doesn't have children either)…wait until you're parents and I think you'll understand more clearly what I mean. Honestly, most times CUSS was used was in the place of the F-bomb, which is a VERY big bad word for kids. They didn't substitute it for "shut up" or "stupid" which are not "nice" words, but VERY mild compared to the f-bomb. For the most part, the f-bomb is heard VERY rarely by my children, and if we went to a kid's movie, they're prepared to hear the former, milder "swear" words but not heavy hitting swear words. Would I let them sit in on any other movie that was dropping the f-bomb? Absolutely not. So why is it ok to let them mentally insert the word every 10 minutes or so during a viewing of a children's movie? It wasn't like they said cuss once or twice…it was a LOT.

Anyway, it WAS a funny movie and we've been quoting it quite a bit…so for the most part, the cussing was the only part that bothered us.

  14. @ Univarn… I'll email ya. I'm thinking perhaps the 27th.

@ Shannon… You can also find it via the iTunes STore's Podcast section now. Perhaps you'll have a bit more luck that way. I just double-checked, the top five conversation comes in at 30:24

@ Caralyn… Didn't mean to sound disagreeable. You're right, we don't have kids…but I think when Lady Hatter and I do have kids, language in movies will be a ….. lighter concern??

You're right, "cuss" was subbed in for "fuck" quite often, but they still always said one instead of the other. You said it yourself – the younger two weren't catching it (so problem averted). As for the older two…well, even though they knew what the movie was *actually* saying, they knew that because they're old enough to understand such things.

Where I think your kids will be just fine, is that they have great parents like you and T to teach them when swearing – be it "cuss" or anything more severe – is and is not appropriate.

Missus Hatter's parents and I raised us both with very little stigma placed on cursing. Speaking for myself there was only one REALLY bad word, the others were said by my entire family with a strange degree of frequency. But that one word was something you didn't dare use with the parents around.

Like we said later when we were talking about SOUTH PARK – both of us would rather our kids heard a bad word or two than watched something with heavy violence.

You're right though…you don't expect such things in a family film, but it is rated PG right?

Anyway – thanks for listening, and for the feedback.

  15. Thanks Hatter – was awesome to listen to the rest of it on iTunes, both of your top 5 Animated film lists were awesome! I loved how it was classic, classic but ended with zingers! Didn't expect that.

Reminds me I still have to see The Little Mermaid. Perhaps over the holidays.

I'm subscribed in iTunes – look forward to hear more!

  16. My sound finally came back. I like it. I really really like it. Okay, that sounds creepy. But I do like it. Honest.

  17. @ Shannon… Thanks for the feedback. I'm still bemused by how much fun I'm having doing these! I actually recorded episode two last night, so look for it to go up after the weekend (once I have a chance to edit it).

@ Andrew… Thank YOU for the comment. Wow…I'm rather surprised how much everyone seems to be diggin' this. Really gets me motivated to record more and strike while the iron is hot! As mentioned earlier, episode two will arrive next week.

  18. I'm grumbling at iTunes and/or Gcast, as I downloaded the Matineecast, only to have it end halfway through. I'd heard of and seen this happen with the LAMBcast a few times as well (and possibly some other podcasts), where it doesn't download the whole thing. Arrgh. So now I've only heard half of it and need to re-get it, which I will do soon.

However…like what I heard thus far. Looking forward to the rest of it, and you and Lady Hatter made for an entertaining team.

And of course, both you and Ryan are more than welcome to hop in and participate in an LAMBcast should you ever have the time/availability. Also, should you need any assistance in figuring out how to record two or more people using Skype, etc., just mail me.

  19. @ Fletch… Totally know that feeling! I had to download episode three of the LAMBcast four times before it would give me the whole thing…don't know what the hell is up with that.

Thanks for the LAMBcast invite, I'm definitely looking forward to it, and I'm sure Ryan/Univarn is too. He's actually going to join me in recording Matineecast #3, which will be my year-end episode.

Again – thanks for listening, you and your LAMBcast were a big help in showing me what I wanted my own podcast to be.
