When the calendar turned to 2012, the conversation turned to a pair of common topics: Summing up the year that was, and anticipating the year to come.

Of course, There are a lot of tentpole films that are cause for much excitement. However perhaps even more exciting than those are the movies coming from specific directors who tell somewhat smaller, and often weightier stories.

Enter Rian Johnson.

I count myself a huge fan of BRICK, and an admirer of the underrated BROTHERS BLOOM. So knowing that he has a new sci-fi film on the way is cause for much joy.

Knowing that it will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Gravy.

    1. Gee…I wonder why you have such anticipation for the film? Actually, jokes aside, this is the year of Jo-Go…what with four films on tap before the calender turns.

      1. Ugh, don’t remind me. Between this awesome sauce, The Dark Knight Rises, that crazy looking bike movie, and that biopic. I don’t know if my brain will be able to handle all this. Next you’ll be telling me he’s working with Daniel Day-Lewis in one of those mo… WHHHHHHHHHAAAAAATTTTTTTT???

  1. I loved Brick, hated the Brothers Bloom, and I can’t wait for this movie. I have incredibly high hopes, which can frequently be a problem in and of itself.

    1. High hopes are a massive problem, as it can often cast a shadow on a perfectly well-executed film. What was it about Bloom that you weren’t fussed over?

  2. Looks truly phenomenal. Even though Johnson didn’t totally blow me away with Bloom— I just found it to be kind of meandering and flabby and a bit too obsessed with its own cleverness– I still think of him as one of the more exciting new filmmakers making a name for himself today. Seeing him tackle something this ambitious will, I suspect, leave us all impressed even if the results aren’t perfect.

I hear ya on BROTHERS BLOOM. I’m not prepared to go twelve rounds with someone over it, just curious to know what people don’t like about it. As for LOOPER, part of me gets a very big Duncan Jones vibe from what we’ve seen so far.
