Early 20th century crime films always make me wary.

I love the era, and the stories that came from it – from prohibition right up until post-war. However, it seems like its a genre of film that is just ripe for bad filmmaking. For every one true gem like L.A. CONFIDENTIAL or MILLER’S CROSSING, you get sixteen MULLHOLLAND FALLS, or MOBSTERS. So what to expect of GANGSTER SQUAD?

Forget about the kick-ass cast, because as much as Ryan Gosling gets my money every time these days, actors are quite fallible. It’s directed by Ruben Fleischer. He’s the dude who did ZOMBIELAND (which everybody loved) and 30 MINUTES OR LESS (which seemingly only I liked). In what might be a bad sign, the writer charged with adapting this script comes from TV. So I really don’t know on this one gang. It looks very much up my alley, but I might have to hang back a bit and let some of y’all taste the food for poison before I dig in.

  1. Yeah… I didn’t love the trailer as much as I wanted to. I am cautiously anxious about this. Obviously excited for Ryan Gosling.

    1. …and Emma Stone too whose recent run of films I have really enjoyed. Still even with both of them (and Sean Penn!), I can’t shake this nagging feeling.

  2. Andy Garcia, Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and Charles Martin Smith all had to kill themselves just so they could be buried and do an epic full unison rolling over in their graves quartet (luckily they were all brought back to life before anything serious happened).

Anyways….. yeah. Not sure what to expect. I suppose it looks like it’ll be alright. Then again it does have a strong whiff of going south faster than a John Travolta one man show reenacting Battlefield Earth.

    1. Well look who’s commenting again!

I think what I’m quickly surmising is that this won’t be an opening weekend watch, and that I’ll cast a glimpse at a review or two before digging in.

  3. I don’t know, maybe, it’s me but usually I don’t care if a trailer is not impressive (unless it’s horrible). I wanted to see this film before I watched the trailer and nothing changed since.

    1. I hear what you’re saying – there have been a lot of terrible trailers cut for stellar movies over the years. I always hope a movie that looks interesting turns out to be a good watch, so here’s hoping that this is no exception.
