It’s amazing the sights you can see when you look outside your own window in this town.

So I hope all my American friends have a good Memorial Day weekend (up here, we already got our extra day off this past week). Pity there aren’t better films for you to see out in theatres!

Don’t get me wrong, I hold no particular ill-will towards FAST AND THE FURIOU6 or HANGOVER 3…I just have no particular interest in either one. Matter of fact, it’s been said before (and I agree) that the two films are jockeying for the same audience. That audience isn’t something I consider myself a part of. It’s not that these films are cinematic cheeseburgers, it’s that they’re especially greasy cheeseburgers that have been sitting under the heat lamp for an hour. Things don’t get much better with AFTER EARTH next week, but mercifully there are indies-a-plenty to keep me occupied this weekend.

Going forward, it looks like that will be the case for much of the summer, since The Lightbox released their summer schedule this week. On the one hand, they have a massive programme of Chinese cinema on tap, so I’ll finally get a chance to watch INFERNAL AFFAIRS and CHUNGKING EXPRESS. Then on the other hand, they have booked a full slate of classic blockbusters and comedies – so I’ll soon be sitting in a full house, partaking in ANIMAL HOUSE, DIE HARD, THE BLUES BROTHERS, ALIENS and the like.

But enough about me, let’s take a look around the interwebs, shall we?

The second episode of Across the Universe has dropped, where the lasses speak at length about THE GREAT GATSBY.

The first couple of Aussie filmgoing are both busy this week will soon be soaking up the Sydney Film Festival. As I write, neither Buckle nor Sam have posted any reviews just yet, but I imagine the words will start coming hard and fast at any moment…so keep an eye out.

Another cinephile soaking up the SFF is Lisa Thatcher. She’s seen a film that many are hotly anticipating – ONLY GOD FORGIVES – and has posted a full review.

The Groover has Returned! Andy Hart has mapped out a blog-a-thon for everyone’s amusement entitled The Movie Mixtape. If you’re new around here, Andy is pretty good at coming up with great blog-a-thon ideas and getting high levels of participation, so circle June 22 on your calendar and prepare to take part.

Vance had a rather interesting moment this week regarding moviegoing cold feet.

Meanwhile at The Velvet Café, everybody’s favorite Swede has a few thoughts on how to make one’s voice heard above the wall of noise the internet has become.

I normally don’t link to someone two weeks in a row, but Dan Heaton is celebrating 500 snobbish posts, and doing so by interviewing Julie Delpy!

Finally, The Droid put up a post full of honesty and introspection as he reaches a blogging crossroads. Go see what he’s been up to and leave a few words. Few of us do what he does as well as he does it, so stand up and tip your cap.

For The tweet of The Week, I turn to Anna – because we’ve all felt this way at some point…

  1. Haven’t we all been in that situation? (By the way, I haven’t made any sort of progress on that review since last night.)

    1. Damned right we’ve all been in that situation! Several of my posts over the last few weeks have been written morning-of via iPhone on the subway.

  2. Thanks for the shout-out again. I have sentiments similar to Anna’s all the time, except then they change to “next week” and then “never”. Clearly I’m a passionate blogger.

  3. Thank God I live in Chicago where we have “Frances Ha” & “Stories We Tell.” That’s the sort of Memorial Day Weekend movie schedule I can support.

  4. Thanks again Ryan! The interview was 12 years ago, but it’s my favorite of my very limited number of connections with actors. Cheers!

  5. Thank you for kind words! Indeed Internet is a very noisy place, so I’m humbled that you heard my voice and broadcasted it this way. Cheers!
