It feels like the calm before the storm this morning.

It’s the sort of morning that comes after a decent night’s sleep, and a lack of plans for the night. This is all probably a very good thing, because tomorrow will be the beginning of my experience with The Toronto Silent Film Festival. Once that’s over, I’ll be able to start sifting through the stack of dvd’s that have already been sent to me by Hot Docs.

Basically over the next month, I can’t ever complain that I don’t have anything to watch – and that’s not even taking into account the fact that baseball season starts up next week! I guess what I’m saying is, leave me a note and I’ll try to get back to you by July.

That said – I wouldn’t have it any other way.

For your listening and reading fulfillment, I give you…

It’s impossible to recap the week without giving so much as a nod to THE HUNGER GAMES. MaMo is perhaps the best place to go for the nod – listen to their podcast discussion and then take a look at the shitstorm of comments that followed.

Andy Buckle took one for the team this week and watched MIRROR MIRROR. Here’s his take on the first of this year’s Snow White offerings.

The Droid has put up a rather interesting piece on the truly daunting challenge of tackling a watchlist – and in case you were wondering, no – the Ryan he refers to in the post isn’t me.

Titania, who made a long awaited return to bar night this week, cobbles together a mantra about classic films – just in time for her trip to TCM Fest!

Speaking of classic films and bar night, this week provided me a chance to meet a local blogger I’ve been following forever – Miss Laura Grande of City Lights. She posted another entry in her noir retrospective this week dedicated to THE NARROW MARGIN.

Just a few days back, when I was looking for a trailer to post this week, I got all excited because I thought for a moment the trailer for TOTAL RECALL had dropped – then I realized it was a trailer for the trailer (pardon?). I thought the fact that this phenomenon was trending was a bit nutty, but before I could hammer the keys about it, I realized Ruth already had.

As for the tweet of the week, it’s a lay-up this week. I can’t argue it because I haven’t seen, but to call this unexpected is putting things mildly…

  1. Thanks for the shout out Ryan. Yes the trailer for a trailer phenomenon has got to stop!! Nutty AND so darn annoying.

  2. Thanks for the shout out. I really didn’t like Mirror Mirror at all. Apart from a few chuckles, I was stone-faced and growing increasingly annoyed. I don’t get all the fuss about Tarsem. His films look great – and they always have elaborate sets and costumes – but in this, nothing else hit the mark.

    1. Part of me is starting to think he’d be better off as a DP or an Art Director than a film director. Either that, or he needs to get choosier about his projects.

  3. I remember being confused why the trailer for Total Recall was only 30 seconds, until I read teaser for a teaser. Completely absurd.

  4. Holy shit! You weren’t kidding. That is one crazy storm over there. I wonder if people care about The Hunger Games at all . . . lol.

    1. Once in a while on that site, a conversation will come along that turns into a bit of a dogpile. While I don’t need the headache of watching one big back-and-forth unfold, I do sometimes wish something I posted here would lead to that sort of discourse.
