First things first – Blind Spot participants, your posts are due Tuesday. Some of you have already sent me links, everyone else – get ’em in!

Today’s photo is one of the older ones in my galleries, but I wanted to give myself a visual reminder to go get my haircut soon. Just yesterday, Sasha James asked “Is your hair a lot longer than usual, or is it my imagination?”. Yes, you needed to know that.

Slightly more on-topic, I’m pretty stoked because Hot Docs is right around the corner! In just a few days I should start getting some of this year’s titles to watch in advance of the festival, which always creates a fun-yet-daunting time around my place since the TV stand just becomes littered with dvd’s to be watched. To any of those covering the festival, have you noticed any titles I should try to make a priority?

Other than that, things are sorta quiet movie-wise.

We’re still wading through the muck that is Winter/Spring 2013 at the multiplex. I really wish studios would take a note and take the dip in box office as a sign we don’t want to feast on scraps. Discounting two 2012 holdover (ZERO DARK THIRTY and SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN), I’ve seen nine films eleven films in theatres since the turn of the calendar (Edit: I forgot about REBELLE: WAR WITCH and DEAD MAN DOWN). Only one has blown my hair back (STOKER), and that film is still getting the slow roll out!

If you show ’em, we’ll watch ’em. We promise!

For your listening and reading fulfilment, I give you…

Once again, I find myself pimping someone’s work in back-to-back weeks. This time out, Andrew Robinson is the beneficiary since he has launched a new podcast where he teams up with local critic Andrew Parker for a new show called Movies You Love.

In a perfect world we would get montages and photo essays from Bob Turnbull every day. We got a glimpse of that perfect world this week when Bob dedicated a post to the imagery of GIRL WALK // ALL DAY

Rachel Thuro has never been a big fan of documentaries (for reasons which make perfect sense). So when she finds one that she really digs, it’s occasion to take notice.

On a week where I came across a film I can’t believe made it to DVD considering how inappropriate it is, Movie Mezzanine has dispelled a few myths on “controversial films” that really aren’t.

This week, the guests from Matineecast 75, Courtney and Dionne, caught a screening of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY at The Lightbox. Here’s how the drive home shook down.

When I saw Abbas Kiarostami’s new film, LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE, back at TIFF 2012, I found myself wondering what James Blake Ewing would think of the movie. Now I know.

Since word came down that Sam Mendes wouldn’t be returning to helm Bond 24, I’ve been thinking to myself that Kathryn Bigelow should step in. According to Fandango, I’m not the only one.

Finally, at The Audient, vance is having some completely different thoughts about Ridley Scott’s classic – BLADE RUNNER.

Then there’s the Tweet of The Week, which this week has a man who loves the classics ruminating on something modern…

  1. Thanks for the link. Glad you are in agreement about Bigelow for Bond. I don’t wish to rub it in too much about it being a good time of year for movies in the UK, but, I have seen more movies at the cinema this month than you have this year! Stoker is by far my favorite of the year to date.

  2. Ye the theatre is full of bores… I think k this is the fourth weekend so far this year that I’m avoiding the cinema, and I don’t get all the real indie good films you have. Still pissed I’m not getting STOKER or SPRING BREAKERS. Two of my most anticipated films of the year… Sigh… At least there’s GI JOE 2 next week (and I say that with 0 sarcasm)

Thanks for the link man. Hope you’ll give the show a listen and let me know what you think. Your turn will come. Want to get ‘better’ at that format before I go down the rabbit hole of your hatted mind….

Otherwise… go get a haircut you hippie!!!

  3. To be completely honest, I’ve been busy covering the Canadian Film Fest (which has been running since Wednesday at the Royal) to pay much attention to the Hot Docs line-up. I plan on looking through the selections early next week.

  4. Thanks for the kind words dude…Very much appreciated.

As a lead in to Hot Docs, it’s nice that Rachel found a doc she likes – and it’s a damn good choice too.

I’m hoping to get my Hot Docs preview up this weekend and then send my requests for screeners/links in. I’ve pared it down to 35 that I want to see…B-)

As for priorities, well you obviously already have the doc about the history of funk (“Finding The Funk”) at the top of your list, right? Right!? I’m also looking forward to “Brothers Hypnotic” about the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble who are pretty fantastic. In the non-music side, the clip they showed from “The Expedition To The End Of The World” at the press conference made it look awesome (both visually and from their approach to the film).

    1. The Expedition to the End of the World is high on my to see list as well. The screener arrived in the mail last week…though I may opt to see it on the big screen.

  5. Thanks again for the linkage!

I too find it a bit daunting to find time to squeeze in all of the Hot Docs screeners. However, it looks to be another strong festival this year. I only have five or so “must see” films but a whole lot of “this sounds great” titles on my list. I expect to be pleasantly surprised like I was with The Imposter and Beauty is Embarrassing last year.
