Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips

…and then something strange happened…

It’s no secret around these parts that I watch a hefty amount of movies in a year. It’s also no real secret that 2015 has found me reading a healthy amount of books (I should be finished number fifty before the weekend is out). Once or twice I’ve been asked how I find the time, and I usually respond by saying that while I’m not out to prove anything, I’m also generally the sort to make full use of time. For instance, where the books are concerned, most of that just came from keeping my cellphone in my pocket a bit more often.

However, into all of this entered a new twist – the concerts.

A few weeks ago, my brother got me into looking up old shows I’d been to on Setlist.fm…which goes a surprising distance into the past. But then I started logging this year’s shows, and realized “Holy hell – I’ve seen a lot!”. Specifically, I’m on-tap this year to see more concerts than I’ve ever seen in one year since I started going at the tender age of thirteen. While I’m not at Bob Boilen levels of live tally, I’m certainly ringing ’em up this year in ways I usually don’t. I know part of it comes from The PanAm Games and its accompanying series of free shows, but still…how did this happen? Does it just come with learning about acts like Torres and Waxahatchee earlier and being able to see them for $15? Or am I entering a new phase of my music fandom?

Is this what a midlife crisis feels like?

For your listening and reading fulfilment, I give you…

Season Two of Super Zero kicked off this week with The Dynamic Duo discussing ANT-MAN. Go for the fan art; stay for the fun discussion.

This week, Vanessa realized that while she was off gallivanting, her site turned three-years-old. Drop by Stardust and raise a glass, won’t you?

I soaked up SENSE8 in a matter of hours a week or so ago, and for the life of me I swear that show is flying under the radar. Looks like Mettel Ray polished it off this past week and put a post together on the whole season. So with both she and I recommending this Netflix series, what else do you need?

Andrew is wondering why many of us film writers do what we do. At the moment, it’s hard for me to put it into words, but maybe you can.

Andina takes a moment to think pink.

Did you know Andrew Lloyd Webber is turning SCHOOL OF ROCK into a broadway musical? Seems like as good a time as any to revisit it, wouldn’t you say? Well, Rebecca did just that this week and was reminded of a handful of very valuable lessons.

One of the most impactful movies I am like to see this year is TANGERINE. It’s not the sort of movie that will have people beating a path to their art-houses, but it is a movie that I feel ups the ante on what indie film is capable of. Over at the Seventh Row, Alex got to discuss the film with its director Sean Baker. Give a read!

As for The Tweet of The Week, I feel as though the void I’ve been feeling this summer is an absence of Huls…

Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for the link!

And it’s superb to hear somebody else loves Sense8 as I do. It definitely deserves a second season, just to tie everything together.

  2. Well I think it’s great to read books instead of busy with gadget all the time. Nice idea!

Thank you for the link 🙂

  3. Sense8 was really interesting. I felt like some episodes (and characters) worked better than others, but it was a gorgeous show and ended well. I hope that it gets another season.
