A thought as you plan to spend too much on dinner/ stew in your grumpiness alone:

What if we all just make a decision to turn Valentine’s Day into a day where you do something nice for someone else? What if we don’t centre it around flowers, cards, and candy (although if you want any/all of those – power to ya), and instead just make it a day about expressing one kind thought?

Take the love out of it – the romance, the expectations, the commercial intent.

Make it about taking one day where you show someone who means something to you that you care. It could be as simple as buying their morning latte for them, or writing an unprompted email that says “Know what – you’re awesome”. Dial it down from making plans and spending money into just sharing kind thoughts with one-another.

For me Valentine’s has just been an excuse to do something nice for Lindsay – whether it’s a big evening out, or an intimate night in. We tend to do the sorts of things one could also do “some random Wednesday in August”. I wish more people saw it that way; that they didn’t have expectations about what they should give and what they should get, but that they took that one second to tell someone they really care about what they mean to each other.

So that’s my idea for you – for everyone who is in love and everyone who isn’t. Forget about the materialistic, manufactured, gestures-with-agenda. Just do something small today to show someone you care about what they mean to you.

Ya never know – it could catch on.

The Chicks with Accents have returned and fallen in love. Well, sorta.

James Blake Ewing is having trouble watching for funsies. I feel like a lot of us have been there, and a lot more of us will. Take a look at where James’ head is at and wish him well.

Know how I like to suggest y’all should watch a film again? GMan wrote a wonderful piece this week that tells me he understands why I make the suggestion.

Several people this week have linked to Jessica’s wonderful reflections on FRANCES HA – reflections that gloriously weave in her love for New York City. Everyone who linked it was right on the money to do so. Allow me to link it once more for good measure.

The Walking Dead returned last week, and despite its big ratings I’m sensing that a lot of people are growing wary of Rick & The Gang. The Droid seems to have figured out a way to improve things, and in three simple episodes no less.

Andina – who will actually be taking a break from blogging in the very near future – has pulled together lessons from five romantic movies she has learned through the movies.

Then there’s the Tweet of The Week, which goes back seven days and was timed with the opening of the Olympic Games in Sochi. Really, there are few things this week that made me happier than seeing this:

  1. Hey there! A belated THANK you for the love. I’ve been a bit busy doing all sorts of practical stuff for my upcoming trip to Cambodia. Currently listening to the latest episode of The Matinee. I’ll most likely listen to the second half on the plane!
