I’m smiling quite a bit these days.

If you guessed that I’m smiling because TIFF is just two weeks away, you are correct. However, the reason why that has me smiling so much these days is because during this festival, I know I’ll be able to catch up with a handful of bloggers who are coming into town for the movie-going goodness. In a few cases they are bloggers who I have known for years but have never met face-to-face.

Basically, if you were to take my excitement for the Chicago meet-up and multiply it by a factor of twenty, you’d be close.

That’s not to take anything away from people like Fredo, Nick, Kristin and the like who made for a great evening in The Second City – perish the thought! It’s just to say that when you scoop together two or three people who have been good friends via email, comment sections, Skype and the like for so long and tell me that they’ll all be dropping by at the same time…well, history ups the ante on one’s excitement.

As I say, it gives me a smile. Back when pen pals were still somewhat common, you’d hear about two of them meeting after many years of only knowing about each other on paper. You’d see them show up on some talk show and be all chipper and weepy about finally being in the same place.

Guess I understand that feeling a bit more today.

For your reading and listening fulfillment, I give you…

Don’t ask me why it took so long to finally catch up with the gang at Blueprint, but I’m glad I did. Their latest episode of their fabulous podcast finds the group talking about Ted, Bourne, and Hitchcock.

I’m still hoping to catch up with KILLER JOE, but fear that with TIFF rapidly approaching that I am running out of time fast. Upping the ante on my anticipation is the fact that Wilde has seen it and came away quite impressed.

Speaking of TIFF, I’ve been getting in the festival mindset by following all the goings-on from the Melbourne International Film Festival. One such MIFF-goer will soon be a TIFF-goer, and has highlighted a film that will be coming over to my local festival. Check out Tom Clift as he weighs in on an amazing looking doc about Kubrick’s THE SHINING, ROOM 237.

Not enough MIFF coverage for you? Here’s Buckle’s take.

Still not enough MIFF coverage? Here’s Sam’s take.

Birthday’s abounded this week. Take a moment and drop by two of the most enthusiastic young writers out there many happy returns: Nikhat and Stevee.

Speaking of special occasions, Wide Screen World dropped its 500th post this week, and celebrated with some wonderful visual flare.

Are you a fan of OCEAN’S THIRTEEN? Didn’t think so. I am, and so is Bob Turnbull. This week, he actually put together a visual post outlining how deceptively beautiful a film it truly is.

Jake has penned a wonderful eulogy for Tony Scott.

Have you started watching classics that were highlighted on the Sight & Sound list yet? Jessica has, and actually came away from THE RULES OF THE GAME somewhat underwhelmed.

Meanwhile, Vance revisited one of my favorite Soderbergh movies, and discovered that OUT OF SIGHT had more to offer than he first thought.

For the Tweet of the Week, we have to hand SV one for pure honesty:

  1. Thanks for the Blueprint plug! I don’t think many people have got round to ‘catching up’ with our podcast yet, so I’m always happy to see people spreading the word. Our chats are incredibly informal and rough around the edges, but we love recording them and hopefully people enjoy listening to them!

    Cheers

    1. You are most welcome sir, and I’m always happy to find a new show that gives me a great cluster of back episodes to go through.

The impromptu nature of your chats is specifically what I like. So few shows (my own included half the time) have all the speakers in the same room, and it really gives your show an energy that can’t be matched.

      Keep ’em coming!

  2. Thanks very much for the plug, Ryan. Feel I could have said so much more with it (esp. what a great actors’ director he was, and how he single-handedly put black actors in the leads for mega-blockbusters and didn’t even need to get on a soapbox for it), but all I could process at the moment were the images.

And I’m glad to see two Soderbergh-related pieces. I just put one up myself this morning.

  3. Oh Tyler…that’s a great tweet. At that time I was settling in watching Goodfellas with some old Chinese food left over from my birthday. But I had pants on.

    Thanks for the link, man!

    1. You’re most welcome for the link Sam – thanks for returning the favour on your very first links round-up! I have massive plans for TIFF coverage, so make sure to check in often beginning a week tomorrow…and spread the word!
