In case you missed it, my plans for this episode went sideways twice over as different movies were pulled from this weekend on the release schedule (notice how little came out this week?). So with no big releases seeming like a good idea, and my guest and I unable to come to a consensus, I turned the decision over to the listeners.

And lordy did listeners ever come through!

When I started writing – and likewise when I started recording – it was in the hopes that I could find out about the good stuff. So perhaps it’s apropos that on the even of the hundredth episode, I get a bright shining reminder why I started doing this in the first place.

It’s enough to make me think about letting y’all pick the feature film more often!

Here’s what’s in store in episode ninety-nine…

  1. Thanks for the “shout out” – even if it was in the context of Corey being wrong again…B-) He and I have already hashed out his dislike of “Playtime” and in all seriousness, I do understand that the movie is definitely not to all tastes. I’m still surprised that he doesn’t like it, but few people will make me reconsider my opinion or views on something as much as Corey will. He didn’t succeed in this case (because Playtime is a masterpiece), but it’s always good to have your deeply held beliefs occasionally questioned.

Fine job on the main review – I think I like the film even more than both of you (along with Museum Hours, probably the best thing I’ve seen this year). And great match with Cabaret Corey (like Ryan, I thought “why didn’t I make that connection?”). The structure of the film (flashing back after you see big events) worked wonders for me – it emphasized every little moment (good and bad) when you knew what was to come.

Also love A Mighty Wind. Not the funniest Guest movie, but possibly his best since the characters expand through their music. The damn thing just leaves me feeling all happy.

    1. I feel like I’ve missed out by not having you or Corey on a show where we radically disagree. Something for me to work on for the next 100 I suppose.

PS, how’d you like the NASHVILLE discussion?

  2. Heh, I had no idea that you felt the same way about Return of the King. It’s one of those things where I’ve read the books, so in one way I’m glad they took the time to tie up all the threads and have all the characters get their send off (yet they did somehow manage to skip the Harrowing of the Shire, though I think that’s more for “happy ending” reasons than for length), but I think you could’ve gotten all that content in without slowing down so much and trying to wring so much emotion out of each one that I didn’t even care any more by the last one.

Like you, it soured me on the trilogy. I have yet to rewatch them all, and I’ve never sat down with the extended editions, even though I own them. On the other hand, I actually didn’t feel this way with The Hobbit – I loved The Hobbit and felt like it drew me back into that world that Return of the King put me off of. Interesting that both you and Corey felt the opposite on that.

    1. See, with all of this said, I haven’t revisited ROTK since the theatre…so part of me thinks that needs to be done too. If only it wasn’t so darned long! Perhaps the next time I’m home sick from work.

PS – Episode 100 goes up Monday morning. Make sure to tune in!
