Much like last year’s wrap-up show, it feels like this episode has been in the works for a long time. And also like last year, the wait was worth every second. There’s a technical hiccup or two along the way, but such things happen when you’re on a transatlantic call. I should also mention that I think it’s fitting that my final guests of 2011 are Brits, since I’m hoping to reach out to a few more international guests in the coming year.

As is to be expected, this episode is lengthy – matter of fact it’s the longest Matineecast episode ever! It beat the old mark by a mere forty-two seconds, and appropriately enough the old mark was held by the “2010 in review” episode. Guess I got those chapter stops figured out right in the nick of time, eh?

Once again I bring you an episode that is far more collaborative than most, and I want to thank everybody who helped me bring it together. I couldn’t be happier with the results, and it’s a fitting send-off for a year where going to the movies introduced me to so many wonderful people – both around the world and here at home .By the way – For my favorite part of the episode, go straight to chapter seven, or the sixty minute mark.

Finally, if you’re curious about the songs used as bed music, the track list can be found below in the show notes. Many thanks to Shane for helping point me towards additional songs.

Here’s what’s in store in the Ron Guidry episode…

  1. Completely agree with Lyndsay about HP8! The first time I saw it, I couldn’t take it in either. Saw it for the fourth time today. 😀
And yaay for Midnight in Paris! Am I the only female who like worships Woody? 😛 Favourite movie of the year yet.
Woah everyone really loved The Skin I Live In. It’s in my top 20 currently, but I was a bit freaked out by it.

    1. I don’t think you’re the only female who worships Woody…but perhaps one of the few. I think we were all freaked by skin, but also quite taken by how freaked we were.

What about the feedback question: What 2012 film are you most looking forward to?

      1. Just posted a list of my most anticipated films, but the one I am dying to see the most has to be Django Unchained. Tarantino magic, and Leo Di Caprio as the villain- WIN!

  2. This was a fun discussion to listen to. I agreed on some, disagreed completely about others and that’s how it’s supposed to be.

A few mentionings of the ones where I had a completely different opinion: Bridesmaids. I didn’t see what was revolutionairy about it at all. It was a pretty standard comedy. Just having a lot of women in it doesn’t necessarily make it inovative. They still were dressed in pink, wanting to get married and experts in baking cup cakes. I really had expected something different and in that way it was one of the letdowns this year.

But the biggest disappointment of the year was probably Tintin. I don’t agree on that you’re bound to love it if you’re a Tintin fan. I was brought up with Tintin and I really didn’t like this movie at all. It didn’t capture the atmosphere of the franchise. What susprised me most of all what that I found it so boring. I almost fell asleep. Something was very wrong there.

I’m a huge Woody Allen fan myself and Midnight in Paris was ok but definitely not one of his best. It was a forgettably fluffy little piece, just some brief entertainment for the moment.

I was glad to hear some love for Melancholia. The end scene of it is one that I’ll really bring with me from this year.
Equally I can’t but agree with all the praise for The Skin I Live In. Definitely one of the best movies of the year.

I was also completely on board with the love for Animal Kingdom. It hasn’t even been released in a cinema in Sweden, but I caught up with it on DVD and was stunned. Fantastic movie.

A little piece of feedback to the show as such: If I could choose I’d rather not have the music playing in the background why you’re talking. I’ve never understood why podcasters do that. If you want music, play it between the talking but not meanwhile since it’s distracting. But maybe that’s just me being conservative.

That’s just minor grumblings though. All in all it was a great show and a good effort.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Sam’s right – the music under the discussion is strictly a year-end episode affair. If you dig up any back episodes, or listen to future episodes, you’ll notice that’s nowhere to be found.

You have it right – the agreement and disagreement is half the fun. Case in point, they way things got really divided when Sarah mentioned her number one! I imagine if my three guests had seen my choice for number one, things woud have divided again…either that, or all three would have ganged up against me!

Thanks for listening Jessica – Happy New Year, hopefully I can get you on the show as a guest in 2012!

      1. Yeah I’ve listened to quite a few episodes of the ordinary podcast and I can’t recall getting bugged by any music then, so I figure there was none.

Re your choice: I see where you’re going with it. Poetry indeed and if it was only for the cosmic parts, which I enjoyed a lot, I could have gone for it. I didn’t care for Sean Penn too much though and got sleepy by some of the childhood scenes. There were things I couldn’t wrap my mind around which Melancholia succeeded better in. Still a very memorable movie indeed.

I’d totally love to be on the show. Hopefully we can coordinate our timezones and schedules at some point this year!

        1. I’ve never been tempted to regularly make the music part of the show. Thing is though, especially with the longer episode, some music helps to pick up the pace (think of films you watch with no soundtrack that “feel long”). Again though – your point is a good one.

I wonder what it means that two films with such universal questioning like MELANCHOLIA and TREE OF LIFE dropped in the same year means.

Timezones shouldn’t be an issue – I had Lesya from Kiev on this year. The tricky part will be finding a film that’s in theatres for both of us – but here’s hoping we can make it work!

  3. *hops in*

MatineeCast scarcely plays music in the background. But – if memory serves me straight – I believe last year’s round up had music in the back as well. So I suspect Ryan likes to – while glorifying a year of cinema – shine light on some of the great music that came out over the past 12 months.

I agree sometimes the music is a bit too loud – but albeit, it’s typically a great mix.

    Onto the show…

Don’t agree with a majority of the picks – but hey, that’s me. No BEGINNERS or DRIVE love was sad to listen to. Still, good talk on 50/50 – a criminally overlooked film amid the “list making of 2011”.

Simon’s friend with apparently no voice in any other circumstance (forgot her name) – very funny – even if she does hate Woody Allen (has she seen ANNIE HALL, MANHATTAN, or HANNAH AND HER SISTERS?)

And really – as per usual – the whole show was enjoyable to listen to. Insightful and fitfully knowledgable, I can think of few podcasts I’d rather listen wrap up what has become (quietly and subtly) a great year for contemporary cinema.

    Happy 2012 folks.

Oh! Almost forgot: this line by Simon … “I HATE DRIVING MISS DAISY” … had me laughing for consecutive minutes.

    1. Couldn’t help it – wanted to bring in some of the year’s best tracks. They’ll be gone in two weeks, so no worries there.

I loved BEGINNERS, but it was outshone by a few other films as the year went on, and while I like DRIVE, it never felt like ‘best of the year’ material for me. More ‘cool’ than great. That said, it was one of only three films to get multiple mentions in the montage!

Sarah has seen other Woody Allen films – I reckon she would have been exposed to them during the prep for our Film Locker episode on the man. Guess he’s just not her cup of tea.

Simon’s DRIVING MISS DAISY comment gave me the giggles too…especially after I cut out his little preamble and just dropped that in as the opening remark.

      Thanks for listening!

  4. Nice round-up show as usual. I do like the music intros that comes and goes but during the conversation it got a little to loud from time to time.

I have a hard time assembling a top 5-10 list of the year and people would probably not take it serious since I’m a commercial for most parts when going to the cinema.

I look forward to all the Matinee 2012 awesomeness!!!

      1. hmmm I’m not a huge Batman or Avengers fan and when it comes to 2012 releases I’m not that stoked about anything except for the Muppets that is premiering in Sweden in february.

Of the “true” 2012 releases I’ll actually go with Big Miracle http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1430615/.

I love those kind of films and actually remember the events depicted in that film since it was huge in the news here.

  5. It was interesting hearing the Lightbox story, since I was also at the 80s Tweet-Up and I actually returned to the Lightbox the very next day to see Melancholia. However, the kicker is that I got my ticket for Melancholia by trading in my original ticket for Fast Times at Ridgemont High, since I got a complimentary ticket for the film by participating in the event.

    Funny how things work out.

      1. Difference being I saw both. 😛

Anyways, I thought I would also mention the films I’m looking forward to in 2012. While there are blockbusters that everyone would probably see (i.e. Hunger Games, Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, The Hobbit), I thought I would mention some of other films I’m looking forward to.

The Woman in Black – I’m actually quite looking forward to seeing Harry Potter haunted by ghosts.

Silent House – Not sure if it will get a Toronto release, but I’m in for this one shot horror film.

The Cabin in the Woods – The trailer got me so excited for this film.

Dark Shadows – I never miss a Tim Burton film

Snow White and the Huntsman – The trailer sold me on this one.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – Title says it all.

Brave – I never miss a Pixar film.

Looper – Brick is one of my all-time favourites and I’m so looking forward to Rian Johnson’s third film.

        Frankenweenie – See Dark Shadows

        That’s all for now.

  6. Lindsay – I’m with you on Tin Tin! It’s not the animation that was bad (though the 3D certainly didn’t help the film any), it’s the characters. They’re not totally loathsome, but they are extremely one-dimensional (metaphorically speaking) and the humor that was intended made me cringe. It was awful.

And I love how you put the nail on the head that there was no reason for Tin Tin to be off on this adventure – unlike The Goonies or Indy. He’s simply a stuck up dude who is just mad because he still looks like he’s 11 years old and has to prove something to the world 🙂

    1. Dude, don’t encourage her. Jokes aside, thanks for your contribution to this episode, for the bed music idea (mothballed as it may be), and of course for listening

  7. I really enjoyed this podcast. I’d listened to the Film Locker season over the summer, but this was actually the first MatineeCast that I’ve heard. I’m late to the party for sure. I haven’t seen some of the big ones you discussed like The Skin I Live In and The Artist yet. I liked the diversity of the lists from everyone, which is always fun. Nice job. I’ll be a regular listener from here on out.

    1. Thanks Dan – glad to have you as part of my meagre listenership! If you haven’t seen films like SKIN or ARTIST, then I actually sort of envy you. While I’m sifting through the dregs that is winter at the movies, you’ll still be able to come to some of these holdovers for the first time. I see bright spots in your cold winter days ahead.

In the meantime, I invite you to go back a few episodes and listen to some of the uploaded content. I’ll be adding more back episodes soon as a hosting change required me to drop the archive down to eleven episodes or so.

      PS – 2012 films you’re anticipating?

      1. That’s a tough question. There are a lot of good ones, from the Dark Knight Rises and Skyfall to smaller films like Rian Johnson’s Looper. I’m curious about the Hunger Games after reading the books, though I wonder if I’ll be disappointed. In the near future, I’m excited to see Soderbergh do an action film with Haywire. I need to read up more on 2012 releases; I’m still focusing on catching up with 2011 right now. It will probably be that way for another month or so.

  8. “Horse films generally look like rubbish.” That’s the line of the week. Fun episode. Entertaining banter.

As for my most anticipated film of 2012, it’s “Butter.” That’s right. “Butter.” No film has ever broached the all important topic that is butter carving in my native state of Iowa at the cinema….until now. So screw “The Dark Knight Rises.” If I get to see one movie this year, I’m seeing “Butter.”

    1. I can’t tell if you’re being serious or sarcastic but I’ve actually seen BUTTER (I had forgotten all about it until your mention). It’s kind of a sweet movie. I enjoyed it.

    2. I was mostly being serious, just a little sarcastic. I honestly do want to see it. My native state doesn’t get represented a lot in film. I was just worried about its potential quality. But if you say you enjoyed it then that reassures me. I’m jealous you saw it already.

      And it has Alicia Silverstone!

      1. Looks as though Simon got off a lot of the best lines of the episode. Were it not for the time difference, I’d bring him on as a permanent co-host!

BUTTER certainly is a different choice – listen up for mention of this comment in the next episode.

  9. Wow, it’s like Lindsay read my mind when it came to Melancholia, Midnight in Paris and Deathly Hallows Pt. 2. We went in with the same mindset on the first two and came out on the otherside blissfully surprised at our own reactions. And I too didn’t allow myself to really accept the final HP chapter on the first watch, but then it sank in on the second.

As lovely as it is to have lengthy discussions on film, it’s also nice on occasion to hear your thoughts echoed too.

    1. I hear ya – it’s always awesome to be able to point at somebody else who agrees and say “See? See??” I still haven’t had the chance to do my Deathly Hallows bender. Perhaps when I do I will love it all even more.

Oh – and what 2012 film are you anticipating most?

Thanks again for sending in your contribution for this episode, and for guesting on the show again this year! Here’s to podcasting in 2012!!

  10. Since listening to this one, i haven’t been able to that bloody Gotye song out of my head. Well done. I have now bought the song. Thank you. They should pay you money for advertising.

    1. You can thank Shane for that – I needed a few tracks to round things out and Gotye was one of his.

Thanks again for guesting mate, looks like you and Sarah are a hit! Care to comment on the 2012 film(s) you are most anticipating before I record episode 50 tonight?
