Thoughts from your host…

Back in the late winter, I was lucky enough two badass women from two badass podcasts on back-to-back episodes of this show. In both cases, the episodes were somewhat short-notice, and these women were kind enough to help a brother out. So, in both cases, I made sure to repay them by giving them their pick of the litter where future episodes were concerned.

It just so happened, they picked back-to-back episodes. Fitting.

So, once again, I am a lucky podcaster to have such great friends, and a lucky man to have such incredible women to listen to in the hopes of getting better perspective on the world, our lives, and of course, the joy that is filmgoing.

One more technical note about today’s show – as I mention this in this episode’s introduction, I’ve used different software to cut together the last two episodes. This time, it’s an episode recorded in-house, meaning the result might be different from last week. So, again, if things sound a little better or worse, I would certainly like to know.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-sixty-two.

  1. The Trekkie vs Trekker argument actually has a whole section on the Trekkie Wikipedia page.

In a nutshell, Trekker is used to differentiate “serious” fans of Star Trek from the hardcore fanboys. That said, Trekkie was apparently the preferred term of Gene Roddenberry.

  2. Petula still has to be in the top three guests for this show. Well done!

So regarding your question about “cool” stars and why we don’t have them, it sort of goes hand-in-hand with the “leading man” / “leading lady” question. Why are there no more stars that demand an audience anymore? Tom Cruise is kind of the only one left. For a while I thought Clooney had it, but even he’s gone on to do other things.

The short answer: and I’m perfectly okay with being shot down by the court of public opinion on this one but stick to it, machismo. Big, hunky, Marlboro men no longer are really in existence in Hollywood. Gone are the Denzels, the Willis, the Gibsons, Stallones, the McQueens, the Costners and of course the John Waynes.

Hollywood has moved on to the pretty boys and hipsters as their heroes. Which there is nothing inherently wrong with, but yeah, we’re missing the cowboy/harley guys of the 80s.

    1. Thank you very much Andrew.

I think you have an interesting point about the loss of the cowboy/harley guys – and would also say we are missing old school broads as well. I would love to see more women with the physicality of a Lynda Carter or Pam Grier.
