Thoughts from your host…

Strangest thing: Usually, this mid-January conversation I have with my Californian friend feels like the conclusion of something. Since I tend not to get too caught up in wondering or worrying over who gets the Oscar handed to them, it’s the journey to nomination morning that fascinates me more.

Some films begin their walk around now at Sundance. Others start their journey in May during Cannes. Still more arrive at Telluride and TIFF in the autumn. (All festivals are represented this year). So when Maya and I turn on our microphones in January, the stocks on these films and stars have risen and fallen, the narrative surrounding them calcified, and the statues all but won.

This year though, aside from one certainty surrounding The King of The World, nobody knows anything So if Marya and I sound a bit more perplexed than usual…well…that’s why.

In addition, Marya’s Year of Women is very much at the forefront of this conversation. So even though we have gathered for this little tete-a-tete for five years running, this one feels a bit more unique than usual.

Get comfy (again this year, the episode is long), but we don’t waste a single second.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-fifty-one.
