Thoughts from your host…

Two weeks ago, I really did believe that I was going to sit down this weekend and talk about Neil Blomkamp’s CHAPPIE for a podcast episode. But then something funny happened on the way to the studio…the film got so much bad word of mouth. Now, I fully realize that I shouldn’t pay attention to such things and be prepared to make my own mind up…but the thing is, I just didn’t want to dice it.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to turn people’s attention to something beautiful, and been just as long since I’ve been able to have a weighty conversation on this show that went beyond the fluffiness of a winter cinematic trifle.

So, plans changed.

Instead of wondering about the failed promise of a sci-fi director my guest and I use that precious time and energy discussing a film that speaks volumes about the world we live in…and a film I dearly hope more people get a chance to track down.

Films like CHAPPIE will come and go – much as I may well find myself enjoying it – but films like the one up for discussion today are much more worthy of our conversations.

Speaking of that conversation, I’m deeply thankful that my charming and clever guest for this episode was kind enough to drop by my place to record on such short notice.

That’s the thing about doing a show that lives and dies on the backs of the guests; you really do find yourself depending on the kindness of strangers.

Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-thirty-three.

  1. Always a treat when someone raves about a film I haven’t heard of. I will look out for it. It appears to have been screened at a couple of festivals but no sign of a general release.

So glad to hear you mention Fish Tank, although I haven’t seen it again since I first saw it at the cinema but loved it at the time, I really must watch it again. Looking back it made number 12 on my best of the year list.

    1. The funny thing is that FISH TANK was another “holdover” film for me when it dropped – I didn’t catch-up with it until the spring of the next year, so there’s a neat little symmetry between it and GIRLHOOD.

Also, thanks for tuning in on an episode where you haven’t seen the fature…I always count on those being lower-rated, so I’m thankful for every little bit of listenership I can get!

  2. I had heard some things about Girlhood when it dropped at some festivals but wasn’t sure whether it was one of those 2014 must-sees. Turns out it *absolutely* is and I cannot wait to see it. Although that may take a while because… Alaska. Anyhow, I really liked listening to your conversation, it had a great flow and you touched on some interesting topics. I love the mention of Fish Tank, which I watched a couple of years ago with my sister. We both loved it to bits, so I can’t wait to re-watch it soon. What’s fascinating about that movie is that even though Michael Fassbender plays the biggest idiot ever, he is still insanely hot.
