Last week, I asked on social media what people thought about The Matineecast coming in with a little longer runtime. There weren’t too many responses, but the ones I got came down in favour of the show clocking in a little bit longer from time to time. It probably doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess that I was asking in advance of this episode dropping.

I decided to monkey with the structure with the release of NYMPHOMANIAC, giving both volumes the full “New Slang” treatment. The results – along with being lengthy – give Alex and I the chance to really dig in to this down and dirty movie. So we close out about ten minutes longer than usual, but with plenty of chapter breaks for your convenience.

One other programming note – With Hot Docs on the way, full episodes of the podcast will be taking a break for a few weeks. I’m hoping to bring you a few episodes of Life in Technicolor, where I get to talk with documentary filmmakers, but at the moment, nothing is set in stone.

So at the moment, this is the last episode I have planned for a few weeks…but hopefully my mic will be back on before too long. Stay tuned.

Here’s what’s in store in episode one-hundred-and-ten…

  1. Hey man, thanks so much again for having my on the ‘cast. I’m really glad we were able to get it done, city-wide blackouts be damned! But really, I had a blast doing this, and it came out great. Thanks again!

  2. Melancholia and Nymphomaniac are currently the only Lars Von Trier films I’ve seen in full, though I’ve seen the very beginning of Breaking the Waves and very end of Dancer in the Dark when they were on Showcase (back when the channel showed art films nightly). In fact, I happened to blind-buy the new Breaking the Waves Criterion blu-ray as I was listening to this episode.

A film that comes to mind in relation to Nymohomaniac is the 1999 French film Romance, particularly for the fact that it also has unsimulated sex (which is much more graphic than anything Von Trier shows you in Nymphomaniac). I’ve only seen the film once (in film class) and I’m in no rush to see it again.

  3. Great episode!
First of all, the Mr. & Mrs. Smith pick- hi5! I’m straight and all, but that Angelina Jolie moment made me want to change like my sexual orientation.

The song before Nymphomaniac vol 1. made me laugh way more than necessary.

I really liked the discussion. I kinda wish there was a female perspective in there too.

And I would warn you against Antichrist. It’s the freakiest film ever. So much NOOOO!

    1. Thanks for listening – I can’t believe almost one month is going to go by in between episodes (Hot Docs conversations just couldn’t happen this year. As for the music, I had WAYYYY too much fun choosing songs this time. I came *this* close to moving into volume 2 with “I’m Gonna Sex You Up”

    1. Yes, I’m glad you’ve embraced the truth 😛

Seriously though, it was v. sweet. Both you and Ryan are among my favourite people who I’ve never met.

  4. I finally got to see the movie so listened to the episode. Unlike you, I watched at home on DVD but was able to watch both parts back to back.
The biggest surprise was how easy going the film was. Lars von Trier films are normally so oppressive. I have always felt the same about his films, I have liked all the ones I have seen and even enjoyed watching some of them, but I have never re-watched any of them. I think Nymphomaniac deserves a re-watch , I think it will play defiantly with the context of what is going to happen. I am particularly interested in seeing the motivation and decision making of the characters in the final chapters.
Charlotte Gainsbourg was as brilliant as you would expect, but I was amazed by Stacy Martin who was equally as good and appears to be a newcomer with no previous credits.
I always go into a Lars von Trier expecting him to mess with us and am never surprised when he pulls the rug from under us. I think he is doing a little more than that this time. Is the scene where Joe has the guy tied to the chair a key moment? Is von Trier doing the same to us, the audience? Is he asking what arouses us and is it what we expected it to be whether is a clinical sciantific way or an accusing wink?

    1. Thanks a mil for digging back a bit and listening to a back episode. I’ll have to flag your thoughts on LVT and keep them handy for when I get around to my Blind Spot watch of DANCER IN THE DARK
