So something strange happened on the way to posting the yuletide laced episode forty-eight. Ordinarily I give the entire recording a touch of post-production to clean up the sound and rhythm of the conversation. But for a few reasons, I have decided to leave the conversation in this episode largely untouched. There are a few cuts to be sure (mostly thanks to my neighbour who happened to be doing renovations during the show’s opening fifteen minutes), but by and large what you’re hearing is a live mic.

Thus there’s one or two more “Um’s” and “Y’know’s” than you’re used to hearing, but given that I’ve known this episode’s guest for a few years, I figured the energy would more than make up for the unpolished nature.

Here’s what’s in store in the Torii Hunter episode…

  1. Heh. Corrections on my ineptitude: Vertigo was restored in 1996 (not 1991), and the Alternate title for Mario Bava’s Viking Massacre is Knives of the Avengers (not Assault with Knives!)

Apologies for saying MARIO BAVA more than 10 times in that segment! (aha!)

  2. Interesting that both Kurt and I picked a Danny Boyle film as the “film we wished we’d made.”

But let me get this straight Kurt, we should not feel sorry for Clooney while his wife lies dying in a hospital bed AND finds out she was having an affair because he’s rich and good-looking and lives in Hawaii? When someone you love is dying, money and good looks don’t make the pain any easier to stomach. I think that’s a whack statement.

    1. No, I wasn’t saying that exactly, I’m saying all those details undermine the central point of the movie in a way that Sideways, About Schmidt and Election do not. You should still feel sorry for the guy, but heck, he is George Clooney still quite suave. Giamatti, Schmidt and Broderick play “SCHLUB” better.

But you have a point, part of the reason for the Hawaii location is to say that paradise isn’t exactly paradise all the time. Same could go for looks and wealth and all that…

  3. Kurt, you say in regards to Woodley’s performance that you never felt as if the film WASN’T Clooney’s. But I would argue that a true supporting turn shouldn’t overshadow the lead. It should fit right into the ensemble, standing out but never above. For instance, she’s the one who pushes her dad to confront Brian Speer and then when that specific moment comes she steps aside, as she should.

I should also state for the record that her performance is my favorite of the year and so I am completely biased and will defend it to the “death”. Good show, guys!

  4. Nick, echo. I suppose I’m biased, but this is one of the better Matinee Cast episodes. I think having the speakers in the same room helps immensely!

And I too think Woodley’s is one of the best of the year.

    1. Obviously, I concur with you guys on Woodley. I think for me, her part seemed to have just the right level of maturity. I especially enjoyed how she started to see Sid the way Matt sees him as the film went on.

Funny thing, with the year wrapping up and likewise the second year of the podcast coming and going, I sorta took stock of things. The same-room factor is indeed one thing that ups the energy, but so too is familiarity. I think that’s why return guests seem to make for good episodes. There was a good energy and familiarity during your episode last January, but I reckon when I get you back on the result will be even better.

Not like I’m going to give up bringing in new voices, but it’s food for thought.

    1. Welcome to The Matinee Sean.

Glad you like the first episode – while you wait for the next one to go up on New Year’s Eve there are eleven more back episodes to tide you over (and I’ll be uploading a few more back episodes as the weeks go on, so check back).
